Job Title: Clinical PerfusionistDepartment: Surgical ServicesReports to: Chief PerfusionistDate: 2024Overall Purpose of JobThe purpose of this role is to provide Clinical Perfusion services to Beacon Hospital, in accordance with the mission, values, vision and strategic plan of the Hospital.The Clinical Perfusionist, as a member of the Surgical Services Team will operate heart-lung equipment during surgery, under the direction of the Surgeon; administer various types of blood products and medication; control the temperature and blood flow of the patient, and monitor the patients circulatory process during the procedure.Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

  • To provide clinical and technical perfusion during both routine and emergency procedures in a competent, efficient and cost effective manner.
  • The clinical perfusionist will operate the heart-lung machine delivering Cardio-Pulmonary Bypass (CPB) along with cell salvage systems and Intra- Aortic balloon pump.
  • Setting up, priming and running the heart lung machine to maintain life support for the period of cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Administering drugs including colloid/crystalloid fluids, vasoactive drugs, cardioplegia solution and osmotic diuretics as clinically indicated.
  • Monitoring the patient’s haemodynamic status and assessing throughout the procedure to deliver concise, accurate instructions to the surgical and anaesthetic team.
  • Ensuring quality control, calibration and maintenance is in place for the relevant specialist perfusion/blood management equipment.
  • Ensure that patient needs are at the centre of care delivery
  • Ensure that there are systems in place that mean the provision of care takes place in a suitable and safe environment. Identify clinical risks across the service and ensure that appropriate action is taken to highlight and remedy any risks identified.
  • Work in partnership with the Surgeons, the Perfusion team, and the Surgical Services teams to ensure that care, treatment and service needs are met, ensuring a high standard of service.
  • Provide and demonstrate sound clinical judgement and develop support mechanisms for sharing good practice, encouraging service innovation, and staying up to date with developments within Perfusion and related services.
  • Act as a clinical expert in Perfusion to Beacon Hospital, demonstrating specialist skills and knowledge of the discipline.
  • Participate in continuous professional development learning as required by your professional body, staying up to speed with regulations, practices, and procedural changes.
  • Maintain and promote effective communication with all members of the Perfusion team, Surgical Services teams, and beyond.
  • Undertake audit and research as required, ensuring findings are disseminated appropriately and recommendations are implemented.
  • Work in full compliance with Beacon Hospitals Quality and Safety systems.

  • BSc/MSc in a science discipline.
  • Fully accredited and registered with the college of clinical perfusion scientists of Great Britain & Ireland

Experience

  • At least 5 years- experience as a Clinical Perfusionist,
  • Possess and maintain the requisite knowledge and competency to perform the requirements of the role.
  • Experience of working in an acute technologically advanced hospital setting.

Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the laws and regulations set forth by governmental and regulatory agencies that govern all aspects of operating as a Perfusionist
  • Good knowledge of the principles and concepts of administration and management, especially as they relate to a private health care institution, including budget, finance, personnel, contracts, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of the functional aspects, professional relationships, and procedures used in a private hospital care, as they relate to Perfusion
