Context:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Media and Communications, the Head of Social Media will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive social media strategy that aligns with the Organization’s overall communications and outreach objectives. This position focuses on increasing engagement, enhancing the Organization’s visibility, and ensuring that social media content effectively communicates key messages to diverse audiences, including the public, stakeholders, and partners. The incumbent will work closely with various teams across the Organization to ensure consistency in messaging, while also adapting content for specific platforms and audiences.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

Social Media Strategy and Management

  1. Develop and implement a global social media strategy that reflects the Organization’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.
  2. Manage the Organization’s presence on major social media platforms (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn), ensuring a cohesive voice and brand identity.
  3. Collaborate with regional and country offices to create tailored social media campaigns that reflect local priorities while maintaining alignment with global objectives and key strategic priorities.
  4. Ensure that social media efforts are data-driven, with regular reporting on metrics such as engagement, reach, and audience growth.

Content Creation and Dissemination

5. Oversee the development and dissemination of high-quality content across social media platforms, including posts, images, videos, and infographics.

6. Coordinate with relevant departments to ensure timely and accurate sharing of information related to the Organization’s activities, events, and key announcements.

7. Ensure the production of engaging, accessible, and inclusive content that resonates with diverse audiences, including specific outreach to underserved communities.

8. Manage the use of multimedia tools to enhance storytelling and raise awareness of the Organization’s work, including campaigns, events, and initiatives.

Social Media Monitoring and Engagement

9. Monitor trends, public sentiment, and conversations about the Organization and its areas of focus on social media.

10. Develop a proactive engagement strategy that responds to followers, partners, and other stakeholders, fostering positive interactions and dialogues.

11. Manage reputational risks by responding to critical comments and escalating sensitive issues as necessary to the Director of Media and Communications.

12. Stay up-to-date with emerging social media trends and platforms to keep the Organization’s social media presence innovative and relevant.

Training and Capacity Building

13. Provide guidance and support to regional and country office teams on best practices for social media management, content creation, and audience engagement.

14. Conduct training sessions for staff on effective social media use, including platform-specific tips, strategies for audience engagement, and leveraging analytics tools.

15. Develop and distribute social media toolkits, templates, and guidelines to ensure consistency and alignment across the Organization’s social media accounts.

Crisis Communication

16. Develop and implement social media protocols for crisis communication, ensuring rapid, coordinated, and accurate responses to emerging situations.

17. Work closely with the Communications team to ensure that social media channels are effectively utilized to disseminate key information during crises or emergencies.

18. Serve as the primary point of contact for social media communications during crisis situations, coordinating messaging with internal and external stakeholders.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

19. Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of social media campaigns and content through analytics and feedback mechanisms, adjusting strategies as needed.

20. Produce comprehensive reports on social media performance, including insights into audience engagement, content impact, and areas for improvement.

21. Use social media metrics to inform future campaigns, enhance targeting efforts, and ensure continuous improvement in social media outreach.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

• Master’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with seven years of relevant professional experience; or, • University degree in the above fields with nine years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • Proven experience in developing and executing successful social media campaigns for large, international organizations.
  • At least seven years of relevant professional experience in social media management, digital communications, or a related area.

Skills

  • Strong understanding of social media analytics, tools, and platforms, with the ability to interpret data and adjust strategies accordingly;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt content for different audiences and platforms; and,
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. All staff members are required to be fluent in one of the three languages.

For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
