Introduction
The world’s largest fossil fuel producers are already on track to produce more than twice the amount of coal, oil and gas than can ever be burned if we are to hit our climate targets. The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative champions a new international mechanism to complement the Paris Agreement, one that would hold governments accountable for their fossil fuel production plans in an effort to advance a just transition.
The Position
The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty is hiring a skilled Strategic Communications Manager who will join the fast growing International Support Team for the Fossil Fuel Treaty campaign to help shape the global narrative of tackling the climate crisis at the source: fossil fuels.
The Strategic Manager will take a leadership role in working with the Treaty team and international project partners to create and implement global, national and regional plans, including in collaboration with partners to amplify the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty initiative’s key messages and provide strategic input on other projects.
The Strategic Manager will report directly to the Communications Director and work closely with the global communications team, the Campaign Director and partner engagement team, representing a diverse collective of individuals spread across all regions. They will support in leading a team and work with peer networks, government officials, thought leaders, and key stakeholders to assess emerging needs, gaps, and opportunities in the movement.

Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Treaty Support team and partners to strategize and implement impactful global and regional communications strategy & plans
- Lead on operationalizing the global strategy, with special focus on the The Caribbean and North America
- Support or lead on many programmatic communications activities and events with key constituencies including faith, health and human rights;
- Support or lead communications activities as appropriate for major campaign moments
- Support or lead on rapid reaction moments.
- Lead on media relations for North America and the Caribbean, as well as supporting global media work;
- Develop strong relationships with print, broadcast and online journalists in North America, the Caribbean, and globally;
- Support communications and media research work together with international and external experts, including message testing, managing media databases, formulating traditional media reports and planning communications webinars.
- Create and distribute a variety of communications materials directed to different audiences
- Coordinate in-person and on-line events
- Mentor and manage the work of direct reports
- Support comms budget and project management as well as fundraising proposals
Required & desired experience and attributes:
Required:
- A deep passion for climate justice and supporting an equitable transition to a world without coal, oil or gas.
- At least 5 years of experience in communications campaigning
- Specific campaign communications skills including: writing global and regional communications strategy, operationalizing strategy, collaborative and inter-cultural communications work, content production, copywriting, media relations, strategic communications, social media management and engagement
- Commitment to contributing to an anti-racist, decolonial, inclusive organisational culture.
- Ability to work flexible hours with a remote and virtual global team
- Excellent interpersonal skills, strong initiative, and motivation
- Fluency in English is required.
Desired:
- Fluency in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic and other languages is highly desired.
- Experience with Slack, Trello, Squarespace, Canva, Adobe, Hubspot and other content creation tools
- Experience with Meltwater, Cision and other media tracking tools
- Experience with X, Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, Tik Tok, Bluesky and other social media platforms
- Experience living and working in the Global South
Compensation
This is a full-time, salaried, exempt, regular position. Salary is commensurate with experience and adjusted based on location. The total compensation package for this role, including mandated employer paid pensions if mandated by the country’s labor laws, will be in the range of $60,000 to $80,000 USD, and starting salaries are usually in the lower half of the band. This role includes a remote working allowance, professional development fund, health benefits (where available globally), flexible working hours, and generous paid vacation.
