About the Role:

Caterpillar of Australia is currently seeking a Software Engineering Manager to join the team, located in: Bibra Lake, Western Australia.

As the Software Manager, you will be working to evolve the Underground (https://www.cat.com/en_US/by-industry/mining/underground-mining/underground-technology/detect.html) product suite, which involves tracking assets in real-time to provide improved situational awareness for drivers and visualize mine operations for mine operators. The product alerts operators to potential hazards before they become a threat by using a high-precision peer-to-peer proximity detection system coupled with a communication and tracking network.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Provides technical support, and direction to teams and team leaders.

  • Responsible for administrative tasks including budgeting, resource allocation, goal setting, and performance management

  • Oversees performance of individual team members and team. Identifies and addresses staff training and development needs.

  • Main point of contact between Engineering Management, Project Management and Software Developers.

  • Management of the Software development process and responsible for the rollout of new processes and tools.

  • Responsible for the application of appropriate processes, tools and techniques for assuring a high level of quality for developed software.

  • Collaboration with external stakeholders such as Product Leads, Technical Leads and customer support.

  • Support for commercial demonstrations and tenders.

  • Develop and support DevOps roadmap.

  • Facilitate Effective Communication and planning between Domestic and Offshore teams.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Pro-active approach to continuous process improvement and demonstrated ability to implement and manage solutions

  • A bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science, engineering or related qualification.

  • Previous experience in a leadership/management role.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.

  • Strong collaboration skills with local and remote teams.

  • Able to communicate technical information effectively and accurately to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Experience in the application of Built-in Quality practices.

  • Willingness to travel interstate and internationally to support the role.

  • Previous experience in an Engineering Manager role within a complex system.

  • Knowledge of Functional Safety and its impact on software development.

  • Understanding of Networking is desirable.

  • Understanding of DevOps best practice.

  • Understanding of interoperability between hardware and software.

  • Exposure to firmware development.
