Background

Akros Research is supporting a program, funded by the Mastercard Foundation and in partnership with the Africa CDC, that is focused on pandemic preparedness and readiness through basic health and security. This initiative, called Saving Lives and Livelihoods, includes multiple components and partners. As a part of this consortium Akros Research is supporting 15 Africa Union member states in the Eastern and Southern African regions to strengthen surveillance of adverse effects following immunization.

The Project Director will provide leadership, management, and strategic direction for the SLL project in the Eastern and Southern regions of Africa. This role carries responsibility and accountability to the Africa CDC and the Mastercard Foundation. The ideal candidate will oversee the project’s technical, managerial, and personnel aspects, ensuring efficient resource allocation and high-quality outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Strategic Direction:

    • Provide leadership and strategic oversight for the SLL project in Eastern and Southern Africa.
    • Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve project objectives aligned with the Africa CDC and Mastercard Foundation goals.
  • Project Management:

    • Oversee technical and managerial aspects of the project, ensuring high standards and timely delivery.
    • Make critical management, resource allocation, and personnel decisions to optimize project performance.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:

    • Serve as the primary point of contact for SLL activities in the specified regions.
    • Liaise with Africa CDC, Mastercard Foundation, Member States, and other stakeholders to coordinate activities and ensure smooth program functions.
    • Engage high-level government stakeholders to promote project initiatives and secure buy-in for enhanced Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) and Adverse Events of Special Interest (AESI) data collection, warehousing, and sharing.
  • Quality & Accountability:

    • Ensure the production of high-quality deliverables and results.
    • Maintain accountability for the efficient and effective use of resources.
    • Monitor project progress, evaluate performance, and implement corrective actions as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Advanced degree in Pharmacovigilance, Public Health, Project Management, or a related field.
  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 15 years of experience in project management, with at least 10 years in a leadership role.
    • Proven experience in managing large-scale health or development projects in Africa.
    • Strong background in working with international organizations and government agencies.
    • Experience working in multiple African countries in the eastern and southern Africa regions is key.
  • Skills:

    • Exceptional leadership and strategic thinking abilities.
    • Excellent project management skills, including planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and influence high-level stakeholders.
    • Proficiency in data management and quality assurance.

Due to the nature of the project, Akros is limiting project staff members to those who have been vaccinated for Covid19 or those who are able to provide a valid medical exemption for Covid vaccination. This documentation will be required before commencing work.

This position is contingent upon securing and maintaining program funding. It is also contingent upon donor approval.

Location and Term

Ideally, this position will be based in Lusaka, Zambia. Remote candidates will be considered. Travel throughout the eastern and southern Africa regions will be required. The position will be for 18 months.

Reporting

This position reports directly to the Akros Regional Director, who will review and approve time records.
