Job DescriptionOur company has a rapidly growing interdisciplinary team of scientists in London and exciting plans to expand our presence, initially at the Francis Crick Institute as part of our ‘Skylab’ expansion in 2024, and from 2027 in our new ‘state of the art’ London Discovery Research Centre and UK headquarters at the hub of London’s Knowledge Quarter. This will be home to approximately 180 scientists alongside other colleagues in clinical, regulatory and business roles, including marketing, sales, finance and administration.Our teams combine leading drug discovery capabilities and world-class R&D with the purpose of turning breakthrough science into life-changing medicines, applying cutting-edge medicinal, synthetic and computational chemistry to support target validation and identify high quality clinical candidates.We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Specialist Environment Health & Safety (EHS) to be based at the Francis Crick Institute.The individual in this role will be responsible for implementing EHS programs that align with regulations at our London Discovery sites. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring regulatory compliance and driving continuous performance improvement in EHS standards. Additionally, you will also have the responsibility to stand-in for the site EHS Lead when necessary, forging productive relationships with senior partners, external stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.What you will do:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain EHS standards for our London Discovery sites; guide and direct site support efforts while ensuring effective communication with staff and stakeholders.
  • Run all new starters EHS inductions, assist in developing and delivering EHS training programs and in person training.
  • Enhance the safety culture and lead initiatives to promote the Company’s Safe By Choice program.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and collaborate with cross-functional teams (Operations, Facilities, Global Safety & Environment CoE, and Engineering) to leverage best practices. Escalates concerns through management as appropriate.
  • Oversee industrial hygiene requirements, ensuring that workplace exposures are controlled, and report findings to management.
  • Review risk assessments, processes, and change management documents to ensure conformance with EHS regulations and standards.
  • Maintain compliance records as mandated by company policies and regulations and guide facility teams in record-keeping practices.
  • Coordinate and conduct internal inspections and audits of the EHS management systems and associated operating procedures, identifying compliance gaps and opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure that incidents and good catches are fully investigated, and appropriate Corrective and Preventative actions are put in place to prevent recurrence. Support lead investigators and track completion of Action Plans.
  • Liaise with the Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency, and other relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Complete statutory reporting for incidents and ensure internal reporting of significant occurrences.
  • Support environmental sustainability initiatives across our sites.
  • Perform other EHS-related duties as assigned by the EHS Site Lead.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required in a scientific discipline.
  • NEBOSH Certificate (or equivalent) in Occupational Health & Safety and/or Membership of IOSH.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Significant relevant experience in the chemical, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology industry.
  • Knowledge of UK Health and Safety and Environmental legislation.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols, equipment safety, industrial hygiene, and biological and chemical safety programs.
  • Experience in conducting root cause analysis during incident investigations and implementing strategies to enhance safety and efficiency in laboratory operations.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to engage and motivate others.
  • Strong ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Capability to focus on key goals while analysing details for effective problem resolution.
  • Excellent negotiation skills, particularly with senior stakeholders.
  • Collaborative mindset with a focus on teamwork. Demonstrated experience in fostering a collaborative environment, and actively participating in group discussions to leverage diverse perspectives.

Desirable Skills:

  • Previous benchwork experience working in a laboratory setting and utilising laboratory equipment.
  • Proficiency in reviewing biological/COSHH/equipment risk assessments. Skilled in identifying potential hazards, evaluating risks, and implementing appropriate control measures to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Proficiency with digital data systems (Microsoft Teams, Power Apps, MS Forms, Power BI, MS SharePoint).
  • Proven ability to identify challenges, analyse data, and develop practical solutions in a laboratory context.
