We strive to provide scientifically sound, high quality products and services to help heal, cure disease and improve the quality of life.Senior Scientist Pilot Plant Engineering (M/F/D)(Ref: 2406179303W)YOUR responsibilities & YOUR impact:We are seeking an experienced Pilot Plant Engineer to join our Chemical Process Research and Development (CPRD) team in Belgium.We have three state-of-the-art pilot plants in Beerse and Geel which support the development of new chemical processes and produce Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API’s) used in clinical trials. In Beerse, we have the Chemical Development Mini Plant (CDMP) with small batch reactors, solid/liquid separation, drying and milling technology and the Chemical Development Oligonucleotides Plant (CDOP) where we can support synthesis and processing of oligonucleotides. In Geel, we have the Chemical Development Pilot Plant (CDPP), where we have larger batch reactors for clinical and commercial API production. The pilot plants are constantly innovating their technology and data infrastructure to accommodate for future product and development needs.After an extensive training the Pilot Plant engineer will become a plant expert covering both process equipment and the process control systems. In this role, the Pilot Plant engineer is responsible for:

  • Representing the CDxP for key new product introductions in close collaboration with the Scientific Integrator (SI), Lead Process Chemist (LPC) and the operational scale-up expert. All plant related aspects of this transfer are covered by the candidate: project management, process safety, product-quality, technical modifications, training, …
  • Lead optimizations related to current and new chemical processes, making use of data-analysis and experience.
  • Support operational activities in the CDxP: Management of change, deviation handling and investigations, continuous improvement programs and make use of LEAN techniques and root cause analysis.
  • Build up technical expertise for specific equipment and becoming a subject matter expert. Act as an expert in HAZOPs, Process Hazard analyses, audits, …
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of the pilot plants and represent CDxP in cross-functional projects.
  • Act as back-up operations manager for one of the production plants
  • Represent CDxP in CAPEX projects as user: draft URS, input detailed engineering and qualification requirements, organize and execute start-up of the equipment.

You are part of a team of Pilot Plant engineers, plant managers and scale-up experts in the organization that is active in Geel, Beerse or both locations. Now, we are looking for an experienced Pilot Plant engineer that will focus on the first introductions in our CDMP plant and support the upscaling in CDPP.   • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • A degree (MS/PhD) in chemistry, chemical engineering, bio-engineering or demonstrated chemical operations/development experience.

Key competencies required

  • Having a strong affinity with technology and working in a chemical operational development environment.
  • Having an outspoken interest in data analytics.
  • A strong safety, quality, and compliance mindset: understanding of Process Safety Management and cGMP requirements is preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, fluent in both English and Dutch, or willing to learn Dutch. Communicating effectively with stakeholders at multiple levels of the organization.
  • Good organizational and project management skills, capable of managing multiple projects is a requirement.
  • Proven track record of creativity and problem solving. Ability to collaborate with cross functional teams is a must.
