Job description
The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), a government funded academic research institution, invites applications for a senior postdoctoral position in seismology within the Geophysics Section of the School of Cosmic Physics. The position is funded through a multi-partner project (GEMINI), focused on mid-to-low enthalpy geothermal systems. The primary responsibilities in the role will include (i) the installation and maintenance of a temporary seismic network and analysis of its data for local seismicity monitoring & characterisation (ii) seismic imaging of the top 5km of the crust using (a) Ambient Noise Tomography (b) high frequency Receiver Functions (iii) assessment of the value of opportunistic Distributed Acoustics Sensing (DAS) acquisition and analysis, as a complement to an ongoing traditional active (vibroseis) Reflection Seismic survey. Two geographical locations will be considered: (i) urban, atop limestones (ii) semi-rural, where basalts overlie sandstone. Both of these studies will be accompanied by drilling programmes on the island of Ireland.A broader objective of the work is to develop protocols for future geothermal projects in equivalent mid-to-low enthalpy environments.Required:
- PhD in seismology.
- Ability to work independently and drive your research programme.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic research environment.
- Proven ability to deliver on project objectives and milestones.
- Substantial field experience in installing and maintaining broadband seismic networks.
- Experience in seismic data handling and seismic imaging using ‘network’ data.
- Full clean drivers licence.
Desirable
- Experience in working with DAS data.
Duration: Full time.
