The position will be located in Beerse, Belgium.In the Neuroscience Discovery group, our researchers are exploring the emerging science of neuronal proteostasis, synaptic function, and neuroinflammation, with an emphasis on developing novel therapeutics for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. This unique position fits in our pursuit to develop novel treatments to address the high unmet need in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurodegenerative disorders, tackling the most challenging medical problems of our time, and contributing to the advancement of science and the field of medicine. Please visit for more information.As part of a multidisciplinary team, the candidate will perform high quality in vivo studies in rodents in line with the larger project requirements, using established and novel technologies, including behavioural evaluations and stereotactic surgery on rodents. The candidate will do an in-depth analysis and interpretation of the data and records and reports of it accurately and timely to the coordinator and project team leads.The candidate needs to have considerable experience in working with small laboratory animals and surgical techniques.Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting assigned scientific experiments and data analyses with supervisor’s assistance to support preclinical and development programs or areas of biological exploration in compliance with Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN), Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and animal welfare.
  • Spends 90% of time on experiments and other lab-based activities.
  • Drafting technical reports and communication of the results to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Provides input and troubleshoots problems with scientific experiments, analyses, and tasks in assigned areas.
  • Supports the work of project members to accomplish team objectives on time and within budget.
  • Assist in preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, and other scientific documents.
  • Contribute to animal working groups (animal welfare oriented).
  • Over time, independently reworks study design and/or analyses based on interpretations and integration of emerging literature.
  • Understands and applies Johnson & Johnson’s Credo and Leadership Imperatives in day-to-day interactions with team.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in biomedical sciences or related area.
  • Minimal FELASA-B certification or foreign equivalent is required.

Experience and Skills

  • Hands on experience with handling of laboratory animals and surgical procedures is required.
  • Experience in an academic or industrial research environment is a plus.
  • Background in neuroscience and scientific advances in the field is a plus.
  • Engaged team worker with a strong commitment to lab work.
  • Motivated to learn and dare to challenge the status quo in terms of applying 3R principles.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with people, putting the goals of the larger team first.
  • Able to effectively record, evaluate and report scientific data and concepts.
  • Detail-oriented, with excellent record-keeping skills according to established procedures.
  • Good organizational skills, attention to detail, flexibility, and a proven ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, highly matrixed environment is essential.
