Offer DescriptionThe Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) strives to advance science and health for all, through innovative research, advanced education, capacity-building and capacity-sharing with partner institutions in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Within ITM, the Department of Public Health aims to improve the understanding of interlinked determinants of population health, including system-level, sociocultural, ecological and biological; to develop, implement and evaluate interventions that support and strengthen health of individuals and communities; and to co-create knowledge and capacity to contextualise, prevent, detect and adapt to local and global health challenges and threats.Within the Department, the Unit of Pharmaceutical Public Health focuses on analysing and strengthening the pharmaceutical systems, through a triad of research, capacity building and education, and including policy support and advice on international pharmaceutical policies. We have a focus on the context of low- and middle-income countries, and on vulnerable groups. Our current activities relate to access to medicines in confict areas, access to controlled pain medications, access to medicines for vulnerable migrants in Europe, pharmacovigilance, and ethics oversight in pharmaceutical R&D. We run a short course on . Moreover, we have a formal collaborative partnership with the School of Public Health of the University of the Western Cape in South Africa The unit currently comprises five members.As the professor of this unit is recently appointed as head of department for a renewable mandate of five years , we are looking for a scientist to support her and the unit in their academic activities, and to ensure output during the time of her mandate.Your role

• You will contribute to the core tasks of the unit within ITM: research, capacity building, and education – reporting to prof. Raffaella Ravinetto, unit head.

• You will coordinate a range of scientific and capacity bulilding activities in the unit, currently mainly related to pharmacovigilance and research ethics oversight, but with a potential expansion toward new fields and new collaborative partenerships.

• You will develop new ideas and projects, in collaboration with partners in the South (including but not limited to South Africa) and with the colleagues in the unit.

• You will develop and contribute to grant applications for new research projects.

• You will contribute to the activities linked to the institutional partnership in South Africa, and will also contribute to actively exploring its long term sustainability after 2026.

• You will write scientific projects, reports and articles.

• You will contribute to the unit’s teaching activities, including but not limited to the short course.

• You will mentor and support master and PhD students, mainly but not excludively from overseas, in the unit.

• You will assist the unit head with the organisational aspects of the unit.

• You hold a Master in Pharmacy or related relevant disciplines.
• You have proven expertise and experience in a research domain that is relevant to pharmacy and global health.
• You have published your research findings on relevant topics in international journals and conferences.
• You are able to interactively teach international students.
• You have overseas experience with projects in resource limited settings.
• You are willing to conduct short overseas assignments , sometimes on short notice.
• You are a team player and have good communication skills.
• You have an excellent knowledge of English.
• Being fluent in French and have knowledge of Dutch are assets
• A PhD in a research domain that is relevant to pharmacy and global health is an asset
• Additional expertise/trainings on pharmacoepidemiology or pharmacovigilance, pharmacoeconomics, and /or public health are assets
