Posting Summary 

The Schofield laboratory within the Rutgers Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences is seeking 2 positive, dependable, detail-oriented Remote Field Technical Assistants to assist with oceanographic research in Antarctica.

These positions will be responsible for leading the field team in sampling and data collection for the Palmer Long-Term Ecological Research project (http://pal.lternet.edu/), monitoring phytoplankton dynamics in response to rapidly changing physical conditions (temperature warming, sea ice melt, etc.) along the West Antarctic Peninsula.

Responsibilities include field excursions out on a small research vessel 3-4 days a week deploying oceanographic instruments and collecting water samples, processing water samples in the lab, maintaining data logs, and basic data analysis.

  • Deploys to remote field locations for extended periods of time.
  • Collects data and samples for the Palmer-LTER, helping to maintain the 30+ year time series at Palmer Station.
  • Set-up, calibration, maintenance, and use of laboratory and oceanographic equipment (COPS optical profiler, IFCB, CTD, miniFIRe fluorometer)
  • Conducts field sampling using oceanographic equipment.
  • Conducts analysis of samples, including Chloroyhll filters and Primary Production Experiments using 14C.
  • Assists with other side-projects associated with the LTER.

The deployments are scheduled for October 2024. One position will return in May 2025, and the other will return in January 2025, and be paid $2,500/ month.

Minimum Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in marine sciences, oceanography, biology, environmental science, or related field.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in marine sciences, oceanography, biology, environmental science, or related field
  • Previous field work or lab experience in Antarctica is highly preferred.
  • Experience with phytoplankton and oceanographic methods, such as Chlorophyll a extractions, water filtration, CTD and Niskan bottle sampling, Optical instrumentation, fluorometry.
  • Must be able to pass physical qualification medical and dental checks.
  • Must have a valid/ unexpired passport

  • MatLab

Physical Demands and Work Environment 

  • 6-day work weeks, sometimes with long hours on field days
  • Work on small boats in variable conditions – wind, swell, cold temperatures (20-30 deg F)
  • Work and live in a community of 40 people for 6 months
  • Remote field site only accessible by a 4-day trip on a ship, departing from Chile.
