Context

The NRC Central and West Africa region is composed of country offices in Burkina Faso/Niger, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, and Nigeria. All countries are experiencing a deterioration of the security situation, increasing humanitarian needs and displacements due to conflict. The Central and West Africa Regional Office (CWARO), based in Dakar,, oversees the country operations in the region, and provides strategic guidance and oversight across core programme, advocacy and support functions.

What we are looking for

This is an exciting opportunity to lead and support NRC’s media work in the region, produce communication products, and work with global and country colleagues to ensure alignment with global strategies, plans and messaging and supporting country office advocacy and fundraising objectives.

What you will do

The following is a brief description of the role:

  • Lead media and communications crisis management support for the regional office, including contingency planning and training in cooperation with the global Public Communications Section.
  • Take part in the standby duty scheme where relevant and build media contacts in the West and Central Africa region, as well as in Francophone countries.
  • Lead on style and guidelines for NRC communication in French***,***including internal communication and training
  • Act as a spokesperson for NRC on the crises in the region and represent NRC in relevant fora internally and externally.
  • Ensure that NRC Visuals is regularly updated so that stakeholders across the organisation can communicate about countries in the region.
  • Responsible for NRC CWA X account.
  • In exceptional cases, provide support to other regions on media and communications, for example in relation to emergencies or where there is a need for gap filling.
  • Any other tasks and responsibilities falling under the section’s mandate, as instructed by the line manager

What you will bring

1. Professional competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, such as journalism or communication. Or bachelor’s degree in other relevant fields such as international relations, development, human rights, combined with proven media experience.
  • Five years’ work experience as a media and/or communications adviser or journalist – preferably related to development, humanitarian crises and/or foreign affairs.
  • Strong media instinct and the ability to produce and edit proactive and reactive media products such as press releases in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to find new creative media angles and work cross-functionally with staff and teams not familiar with media and communications work.
  • Extensive experience and skills within content production and digital communication: photography, videography, drafting of human-interest stories and production of social media content.
  • A practical understanding of advocacy tools, tactics and approaches with the ability to quickly identify possible media and communications products and engagements that will support identified advocacy objectives.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships internally with the country and global teams and externally with media and communications counterparts in other humanitarian organisations.
  • Experience working with data and evidence from NGO programming and develop advocacy, communications and media products for a diverse range of audiences.
  • Graphic design skills highly desirable.
  • Fluency in written and verbal communication skills in English and French required.

Context related skills, knowledge and experience

  • An understanding of the media landscape in West and Central region and the ability to build/maintain a strong network of journalists.
  • Experience and willingness to function as spokesperson in international and regional media outlets in English and French.
  • Field experience from complex emergencies is desirable.
  • Well-structured and with an ability to deliver on short deadlines and cope with stress, independently and with limited supervision.
  • Strong team player and ability to build trust and secure efficient collaboration across teams
  • Flexibility and ability to adjust to changes and new requirements
  • Willingness to travel

  • Duty station: Senegal, Dakar; Family Duty Station
  • Contract: 12 months with possibility of extension
  • Travel: Up to 30%
