The objective is to develop novel technology for enabling Ultra Reliable Low-Latency Wireless Communications and to commercialize it in the space of remote control of unmanned vehicles and industrial factory automation. This technology is considered a key enabler in those spaces since existing wireless communication solutions are inherently unreliable and of a best-effort nature, and so represent a critical development obstacle.You will be developing the theoretical and technical foundation of the solution from the ground-up, as well as building a robust commercial-grade prototype together with an experienced software engineer. You will work closely with multiple industrial partners to validate the effectiveness of the prototype through demos and trials, as well as potentially create future customers of a spin-out startup that will be created around the solution at a later stage.At Tyndall, you will be joining a vibrant and expanding world-class research and development ecosystem with activities that cover a wide array of research topics including Wireless Communications, Network Protocols, AI, and Quantum communications.
This post offers a unique opportunity to design and build a high-impact technology solution from the ground-up, validate it with multiple industrial partners, and potentially join a spin-out start-up that will be built around the technology.Key Responsibilities

  • Act as Research Lead for the topic area
  • Design the theoretical and technical foundation of a solution that aims to significantly enhance the reliability and performance of wireless connectivity in drone communication and factory automation
  • Implement a robust commercial-grade prototype in conjunction with another software developer
  • Design and supervise measurement campaigns aiming to clarify and document the performance of the prototype
  • Independently lead demos and trials with industrial partners to communicate and validate the performance and value of the solution in the real world
  • Participate in Education and Public Engagement activities, as required.
  • Ensure all activities are compliant with the Tyndall Quality Management system and required Health & Safety standards
  • Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in Computer Science or a similar field of study
  • Typically 7+ years of research experience in the field of computer networks with focus on multi-connectivity
  • Typically 5+ years of professional software development experience in the field of computer networks
  • Experience with transforming research projects in the area of multi-connectivity into deployable commercial solutions.
  • Deep knowledge of computer-networking protocols and the principles driving their design
  • Deep understanding of computer-networking concepts such as congestion control, data reliability, and real-time communication
  • Deep understanding of transport-layer multi-connectivity and the key challenges it faces
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly in writing
  • Evidence of self-starting initiatives, working independently but also as part of a team

  • Experience with the patent process

Appointment will be on the Grade 7 Admin Scale (B) €81,136 – €106,882 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
Contract duration is 6 months.
