Job description

Job description
We are seeking a postdoc to join the Pereira Lab for an interdisciplinary project that integrates structural bioinformatics, protein evolution, complex network analysis, and deep learning. The main aim is to develop interdisciplinary and integrative tools and approaches to better interpret the massive and ever-growing protein sequence, structure, and function data in public repositories.
This includes, but is not limited to:
the classification and function prediction of novel protein families and superfamilies, the interpretation of evolutionary relationships in large protein similarity networks, the prediction and modeling of protein function association networks, the in-depth study of the origins, evolution and biological functions of novel prokaryotic protein families with a direct impact on human health or a potential for novel biotechnological or biomedical applications.
Who we are
The Lab for Protein Evolution and Function Models (https://pereiralab.sites.vib.be/en [https://pereiralab.sites.vib.be/en] ), led by Joana Pereira, will start at the VIB Center for AI and Computational Biology [https://vib.ai/en] (VIB.AI) and the Dept. of Cellular and Molecular Medicine [https://gbiomed.kuleuven.be/english/research/50000618] at KU Leuven in February 2025. Our interdisciplinary research will focus on creating a broad, detailed overview of protein sequence, structure, and function data. We will combine this with deep learning and complex network analysis to predict, label, and map unexplored areas of the protein universe, especially those relevant to medicine and biotechnology on a large scale. The goal is to develop a thorough map of unknown biological information hidden in large bodies of protein information. This will help identify and understand proteins that could be part of undiscovered biological systems or functions, and prioritize them for further study and potential use in biotechnology.
VIB is an entrepreneurial non-profit research institute across the 5 Flemish universities with a strong track record of translating scientific breakthroughs into societal innovations and biotech companies. VIB.AI is the newly founded VIB centre for artificial intelligence applications in the life sciences. In Leuven, it is embedded within KU Leuven [https://www.kuleuven.be/kuleuven] , one of Europe’s oldest and most prominent universities, consistently ranked in the top 50 worldwide. Leuven is located 10 miles from Brussels, with frequent direct train connections to Brussels airport.Profile
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher interested in developing computational methods to predict, label, model and map the protein universe on a large scale. The ideal candidate has the following qualifications:

We thus encourage applicants with a keen interest in contributing to groundbreaking research at the intersection of protein bioinformatics and machine learning to apply.
As the Pereira Lab is just starting, the postdoc will also play a prominent leadership role and will help to shape the overall lab environment and research direction. We offer
State-of-the-art computing and wet-lab facilitiesAn exciting work environment in a top, newly established research instituteExcellent training in academic, technical, and career skills. Support and guidance to apply for your own fundingA stimulating and supportive international research environmentVIB provides competitive salary and benefits, as well as participation in national social security, healthcare, and retirement plans
