About the roleBalfour Beatty is looking to make a critical leadership hire and appoint a Portfolio Director who will be responsible for a diverse portfolio of projects within the Regional Buildings Business.The portfolio will cover projects across both England and Wales, covering sectors such as Residential, Hospitals, Schools, and Defence. The location is flexible with UK travel.The Operations Director will be a key member of our Regional Buildings Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and will:

  • provide robust technical governance of our Build projects at all stages of the project life cycle ensuring projects are delivered to the highest standards, on time and to budget.
  • manage customer relationships through to delivery, retaining the customer following the achievement of expectations.
  • contribute to Regional Buildings work winning activity by providing operational and technical input at bid stage to ensure projects are set up for success from the start.
  • encourage a culture of continuous improvement through lessons learned to minimise legacy issues and drive ‘right first time’ performance.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead a group of project directors to deliver projects safely and to time, cost, quality and sustainability targets, meeting customer needs and expectations.
  • Quantify all project risk to ensure that accurate information is provided to the MD of Regional Buildings and the CEO of UK Construction Services (UKCS), to enable management of any risk within agreed and acceptable boundaries.
  • Appreciate and understand the commercial implications and drivers within the construction process and incorporate these within decision making working closely with the operational team Commercial Manager.
  • Deliver financial performance of those projects under management including appropriate risk management to ensure that financial targets and objectives are met or exceeded.
  • Participate in the development and production of budgets and reforecasts working with MDs and commercial directors.
  • Manage the performance and success of customer relationships to ensure customer expectations are managed and achieved to retain customers.
  • Participate in work winning providing operational input and direction to ensure that appropriate cognisance is taken of all safety, operational, technical, and logistical issues in compiling tender proposals.
  • Provide support to the proposals team in ensuring that operational components of submissions are produced effectively and reflect the requirements of the project under consideration.
  • Lead, develop and coach individuals to build high performing teams and create a pipeline of talent and high calibre project directors ensuring that resource requirements are clearly articulated.
  • Raise the bar on performance across the Regional Buildings business by encouraging a focus on continual professional development and driving industry best practice.
  • As part of the Senior Leadership Team within the Regional Buildings Business, support a right first-time culture through continuous improvement and lessons learned thereby helping to minimise legacy defects and spend.

Who we’re looking forThis is a leadership position for an individual with significant previous experience of operational leadership within Design and Build projects.The successful candidate must be technically competent and have a proven history of delivering and managing a portfolio of complex build projects. Experience of projects at all stages of the project lifecycle is key; from work winning through to project delivery and aftercare.Furthermore, the individual must have strong financial and commercial understanding to ensure targets are achieved and risk is minimised.
