Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

As a Network Development Engineer, you will collaborate with Systems Development Engineers to invent, design and build innovative tools, while defining processes for monitoring, operating, and scaling ground network infrastructure to support millions of users worldwide. You’ll utilize and refine the tools you and your team develop, focusing on metrics, scalability, and continuous improvement to automate repetitive tasks, eliminate outages and enable high availability of the ground infrastructure.

Your responsibilities will include driving root cause resolution of network events.

Key job responsibilities

  • Continuously strive for operational excellence by seeking to automate away manual processes

  • Work closely with our network, systems & software engineering teams to ensure fast, smooth roll-out of new designs and products

  • Design and develop tools to measure and improve the performance and availability of the Kuiper Ground Infrastructure

  • Drive operational excellence projects to improve network performance and reliability

  • Provide critical operations support and incident response for the service, while taking part in an on-call rotation

  • Network SME for the operations of the Kuiper’s ground gateway’s and backbone connectivity.

A day in the life

Mentoring, Design, Operational Excellence:

Work with business partners, leadership and other engineers, influence and lead the design of networks and system. We need your ideas and your ability to take initiative, innovate, and produce results as we continuously improve the customer experience.

Day to day work will vary between automation or other scripting work, operational excellence initiatives, design meetings, coordination with engineering teams and external partners, and an on-call rotation.

About the team

The team is comprised of a leader, Systems and Network Development Engineers in North America, Europe and Australia. The overall mission is to ensure Kuiper Ground Infrastructure is always available to serve customers.

This position may require access to information, technology, or hardware that is subject to export control laws and regulations, including the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Employment in this position is contingent upon obtaining any required export licenses or other approvals from the United States government. As such, the successful candidate must be eligible to obtain any necessary export licenses or approvals based on their nationality, citizenship, and any other factors considered by the applicable export control regulations.

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of major internet routing protocols experience

  • 4+ years of working in a Linux/Unix environment experience

  • 4+ years of automation scripting using Python, Bash, Shell and/or Perl experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with AWS services

  • Curious to learn in depth about both technology and our customers

  • A curious self-starter with a proven track record of diving into unknown territory, learning new concepts, and pushing your comfort zone.
