Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant (SL-3)

Salary: $65,000 – $80,000 (commensurate with experience)

The Media Strategist would primarily showcase Binghamton University’s prominent faculty achievements, and the impactful research conducted across a wide variety of media outlets.

Binghamton University has a research, scholarship, and creative activities profile of a premier public university. Binghamton’s research ranks among the top 70 reporting public institutions without medical schools. A media strategist and content creator will focus on enhancing Binghamton University’s reputation as a dynamic research university and promoting Binghamton’s academic and institutional leadership through press releases, media advisories and direct engagement with local and national media outlets. This begins with collaborating closely with faculty members to understand their research and develop effective media strategies to communicate their work both to academic peers and broader audiences.

The objective of the media strategist is to increase the media exposure of the research and creative activities conducted by faculty members and the research centers on campus.

The primary responsibility will be to distill complex faculty research findings into engaging and accessible content directed at diverse audiences, especially other academic institutions, policy makers and potential collaborators, as well as media outlets and the general public.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a multifaceted media strategy to promote faculty research initiatives across multiple channels, including traditional media (print, television, radio) and digital platforms (website, social media, podcasts, video, newsletters).

  • Collaborate with internal teams to integrate faculty research initiatives into broader institutional messaging and branding efforts. With a heavy emphasis on video production and website creation.

  • Collaborate with faculty members to understand their research projects, objectives, and target audiences. Motivate faculty members to be more active in promoting their research findings.

  • Create engaging and compelling content to showcase faculty research, including press releases, articles, blog posts, multimedia materials and websites.

  • Build relationships with journalists, media outlets, and influencers to secure coverage and placements for faculty research.

  • Monitor media coverage and track the impact of communication efforts.

  • Provide regular reports and impact analyses to stakeholders.

  • Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging media relations and research communication technologies.

  • Provide media training and support to faculty members to enhance their communication skills and media presence.

  • Short term goal is to increase the number of media hits for Binghamton University Faculty members.

  • Medium range goal would be to have a high awareness of faculty research and expertise, especially in Binghamton-centric areas of study.

  • The long-range Goal would be to enhance the profile of Binghamton among our peers as a highly functioning research institution.

    Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or similar field

  • Minimum of five years of media strategy and content production experience relevant to the knowledge, skills, and abilities referenced above

  • Proven track record of developing sophisticated, strategic approaches to media

  • Adept at breaking down complex stories into pitches for national news media

  • Demonstrated strong interest in content marketing tactics and strategy

  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with particular focus and experience in writing for media

  • Proven track record in managing complexity and delivering results in a complex organization

  • Good judgment in identifying issues and recommending solutions to others

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Commitment to professionalism, deadlines, and teamwork

  • Knowledge of social media listening tools and reputation management practices

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently across organizational lines

  • Ability to create material for different audiences while maintaining a unified voice

  • Attention to detail and excellent proofreading skills

Preferred:

  • Experience in higher-ed
