Imperial College London invites applications for a Mechanical Workshop Technician to work in the Particle Physics Mechanical Workshop to contribute to the ongoing research activities of the Community.Particle Physics is the study of the fundamental building blocks of nature and the forces holding them together. The Particle Physics Community has an international reputation for advancing the field and members lead many of the current and future international experiments addressing basic questions about matter and energy at CERN (Geneva) and other locations both in the UK and around the world.The Particles Mechanical Workshop provides support services to the research programme of the Particles community, which consists of around 200 members, comprising 24 academics, 54 research staff and 52 PhD students, plus additional support staff and academic visitors.As part of a team of three technical staff you will be responsible for providing mechanical engineering design and manufacturing services to Particles research staff and collaborators. You will be a proficient machinist expected to manufacture components and contribute to the assembly, installation and commissioning of equipment which forms apparatus used for research. You will be expected to contribute significant design and precision manufacturing skills.You will have:

  • BTEC HNC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • NVQ to level 3 in a relevant accredited workplace
  • Satisfactory completion of a recognised apprenticeship programme in engineering including working in an engineering workshop as part of an approved training scheme
  • Experience in the use of traditional engineering machines and hand tools
  • Full experience in the use of CNC machines and their applications
  • Experience of working in a university workshop/laboratory environment
  • Demonstrable relevant practical experience
  • Understanding and use of 3D printers and the relevant software
  • Good general IT skills, use of Inventor, FeatureCAM and other CADCAM software
  • An understanding of the operation, use and capabilities of all equipment within the workshop environment
  • An understanding of safe practice in an engineering workshop
  • Ability to organise own workload from a prescribed list of tasks
  • Ability to work in a methodical manner and to work on more than one project at any given time
  • Willingness to undertake training to improve skill base or adapt to changing circumstances and needs
  • Willingness and be able to travel abroad to carry out any required works
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
