The roleWith almost 320 partners and close to 1500 fee earners in total, Europe is the largest region within DLA Piper International. Led by the Head of Marketing & Business Development (MBD) Europe, the European MBD team consists of the local MBD teams in 14 countries across Continental Europe and CEE. The European MBD team underpins the region’s success through a wide range of high profile campaigns, events and client development activity, aligning the local market demands with the International practice group, sector groups, ESG and Law& strategies, in a fast paced environment.Besides working closely with the International MBD team and the firm’s Global Service Center (GSC) in Warsaw, the local MBD professionals are connected on the European level through various European communities (pitch, PR & communications, events) sharing best practices and working on joint cross-border initiatives. The European MBD team forms part of the larger international MBD team based in locations across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.This role will need to provide a flexible resource and work closely with the local MBD teams across Europe and the Head of MBD Europe to support on a broad range of local projects and key initiatives, including but not limited to embedding International projects in our European offices in line with local needs. This support will be when an office is under-resourced due to departures in the team or additional support required during a particularly busy time. The role will help to driveforward strategic local priorities, bridge capacity gaps, add expert knowledge and identify and share best practices.Occasional travel within Europe and to the UK is a requirement of the role.MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (across the European teams):

  • Work closely with Head of MBD Europe, European MBD team members as well as fee earners in order to action local marketing and business development activities, covering the full marketing mix
  • Support local teams on select projects and priorities in their jurisdiction, helping to bridge capacity needs and/or adding expert knowledge
  • Support European MBD teams and partners/fee earners on local roll-out of global thought leadership pieces and innovative products/tools, localizing associated campaigns and marketing materials to European markets
  • Support the local embedding of International MBD key projects, such as Experience Hub or Qorus
  • Support local MBD teams, partners and fee earners on fostering and strengthening key client relationships via client targeting programmes, with a view to increase cross-selling opportunities within Europe and the wider firm
  • Leverage the power of our internal systems and utilise data analytics, to provide a smarter marketing & BD processes, service and experience to the European teams
  • Work closely with Head of MBD Europe and local teams to identify areas for improvement; collaborate with local teams, International counterparts, GSC and other service areas to improve those processes.

In order to deliver the areas of key responsibility identified above, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Manage local MBD projects and activities in various European markets and team constellations
  • Ensure effective, transparent communication and deliver support to operational local teams
  • Manage and report on local project delivery against plans, budgets and objectives
  • Coordinate key actions and ensuring implementation of actions for select local and European projects
  • Contribute information and ideas to European MBD strategy as well as to local MBD plans
  • Use information on marketing systems to make strategic decisions and identify requirements
  • Champion the collaboration between our local and international teams in line with our values
  • Embrace change and influence others to modify their behaviours and attitudes where necessary
  • Build relationships with other local functions and disciplines within DLA Piper in Europe
  • Be involved in activity which promotes the overall well-being and/or standing of the business; evaluate ethical codes to ensure marketing activities are compliant

The job holder may be required to undertake additional duties from time to time.ABOUT YOUThe successful candidate must have:

  • A Degree or equivalent qualification
  • A strong understanding of local European market needs and expectations as well as understanding of DLA Piper’s international strategy, and the ability to bring those in line with each other
  • A high level of written and oral communication skills. In addition you will be expected to have strong probing, consultative listening skills coupled with the ability to negotiate and persuade senior legal and client personnel
  • A deep knowledge of marketing & BD processes for professional services and profound understanding of the full marketing and business development mix
  • The ability to display a consistently positive and proactive attitude and demonstrate a collaborative working style and intercultural understanding; operating both as an individual and as a team member across different team sizes
  • An exemplary professional approach and demonstrably high levels of commitment and internal client care
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Demonstrable experience in demanding, partner-led international environments, where success has depended on an ability to:

multi-task and work to deadlines
manage conflicting priorities and expectations in a robust and fast-paced atmosphere
perform at a consistently high standard
remain calm and composed in what are often demanding situations
see delegated tasks through to completion at a high standard

  • A proven ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information
  • High level of literacy in IT and marketing systems – Excel, Word, Powerpoint, MS Teams and Outlook are essential; experience of InterAction / CRM and design software would be beneficial
  • Sales techniques, team leading and coaching skills
  • Ability to understand and identify with the firm, its objectives and values
