The NYU Ethics and Journalism Initiative (EJI), a new program committed to advancing ethical standards and practices in journalism, is seeking a Managing Editor/Project Manager (Researcher)  with project management experience to contribute to EJI’s growth, to the success of  the Initiative’s website, ethicsandjournalism.org, and in the creation of an exciting new journalism-ethics award.

 EJI was launched in the fall of 2023 at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute at NYU and works to produce stronger, more sure-footed journalists who are prepared to tackle the many complex ethical challenges facing journalists today and in the future. Through mentoring, workshops, training materials, public events, and collaborations with newsrooms and other academic institutions, EJI aims to ensure that every journalist we reach learns to meet such challenges with skill, humanity, and intelligence.  By advancing ethical practices in the profession, the Initiative seeks to enhance trust in what journalists do.

The Managing Editor/Project Manager (Researcher) is a full-time contract position with NYU employee benefits. It is gift-funded for five years from the start of the job. Employment beyond five years will require further funding. The job is an in-office position based at the Carter Journalism Institute at 20 Cooper Square, New York, N.Y. 

The Managing Editor/Project Manager of the Ethics & Journalism Initiative will have the following major responsibilities:

  • Manage the daily research operations of the ethicandjournalism.org website, including daily production of editorial material and setting and enforcing deadlines for projects and personnel.
  • Solicit and supervise the work of contributors including consultants, students, and designers.
  • Conduct research on contemporary journalism ethics issues; supervise staff members and graduate assistants doing similar research.
  • Research, write and post material to the website; the ultimate goal is create and curate a weekly newsletter.
  • Create, implement, and oversee an ambitious research plan using social media and other strategies to promote the website with various audiences.
  • Research, organize and administer a new journalism-ethics awards program as part of the Ethics & Journalism Initiative, including:

·         Soliciting applications from student journalists, professional journalists, and journalism organizations, managing the application process, and managing and maintaining a submissions and judging platform

·         Working as liaison to the panel of judges, scheduling and arranging their virtual meetings and answering their questions about processes

·         Researching, conceptualizing, and planning the annual awards ceremony and an accompanying  research symposium

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $70,000 – $100,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

 

 

§  Strong research and writing skills demonstrated over at least five years in journalism or a related field

§  Demonstrated focus in prior work on grappling thoughtfully with the ethical choices that all journalistic work requires.

§  Skill and experience at writing and producing content for a website and other digital channels. Facility with WordPress is strongly preferred.

§  Passionate belief in the Initiative’s mission.

§  Proven program management skills

§  Experience overseeing awards programs or events is preferred.

§  A master’s degree is an advantage but not required
