This post offers an exciting opportunity for a lecturer to be based in China teaching International Journalism (in English) at the prestigious Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS).

GDUFS is in the city of Guangzhou in the Guangdong province of Southern China. It is approximately 75 miles from Hong Kong. It is now a vibrant and modern city on the Pearl River, but its history goes back more than 2,200 years. The campus for this position is at the base of the picturesque Baiyun Mountain where hikers and citizens go everyday for relaxation, exercise, and even bottling their own mountain spring water.

Students complete two years of study in China before transferring to UCLan’s Preston campus for the final two years of their BA International Journalism degree. The School of Arts and Media is looking to recruit a lecturer to teach students journalism in Year 0 (foundation year) and Y1 of the programme.

The person appointed would teach students in China, liaising with the course leader in Preston, and manage their progression to the UK. 

We seek an enthusiastic and resourceful Lecturer in Journalism to join the team delivering a high-level of teaching of journalism modules at GDUFS. Working within a committed and experienced team, you will contribute to the curriculum design, course development, teaching and assessment as well as providing module leadership where required. We also require a forward-looking subject specialist who is future orientated and has a good understanding of future trends and influences within this subject domain.

It is desirable within the context of this partnership to promote and develop good working relationships with relevant professional sectors, both locally in China and in the UK. The post holder will also need to have an empathy with working within a cross cultural domain and also to embrace intra-disciplinary working.

The role requires the person appointed to maintain a close collaborative relationship with the course teams at UCLan and university staff at GDUFS and to promote, encourage and maintain high standards for students and staff.

Module information:
This position is responsible for delivering two modules per year with the following specifications:

  • Introduction to News Reporting (Year 0), 3 periods – 80mins each
  • Multi-platform (Year 1), 3 periods – 80 mins each

Compensation:

  • Salary: £27,500 per annum
  • Free accommodation in GDFUS or £1000 (pro rata) towards accommodation costs in Guangdong for the Academic year
  • Work (Z) visa
  • £1000 towards the cost of travel to GDUFS per semester
  • £200 towards a health insurance policy for the year
