The Australian Border Force (ABF), an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia’s frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia’s customs service. The ABF delivers critical border protection and national security outcomes while facilitating the movement of people and goods across the border. Operation LUNAR – Response to increased Civil Maritime Security threats in the Northern Territory (NT):
- Operation LUNAR is a multi-agency operation, led by the ABF to target the increase in illegal foreign fishing vessels being detected in the NT.
- Operation LUNAR will establish an enhanced and enduring ABF posture in the Northern Territory using an intelligence informed, phased approach that integrates the full suite of ABF capabilities (including immigration detention), local communities and a remote area patrol capability equipped to respond to civil maritime threats in the littoral environment.

Duties and responsibilities
An APS4 Leading Border Force Officer (LBFO) in Operation LUNAR is expected to attain and maintain the competencies, skills, knowledge and attributes of an APS4 LBFO (General Duties).
Operation LUNAR Remote and Marine officers are highly capable, flexible and agile, and will be deployed to a range of domains within the NT to meet ABF operational requirements.
Remote and Marine officers undertake a range of duties that may include:
- contributing to the development of remote patrol plans, including sourcing provisions
- participation in a range of remote patrol activities – completing tasks and objectives as directed
- contributing to the planning of community engagement activities, including identification of required resources
- preparing and presenting briefing sessions to patrol members and other participants in remote patrols
- conducting community engagement activities including engagement with Indigenous Elders and members of communities to develop and maintain relationships
- collection of information in support of border protection and enforcement activities
- safe operation of a range of ABF assets, including 4WD vehicles, inshore vessels and navigational equipment to ensure the completion of patrol activities
- contributing to quality assurance activities.

All positions are based in Darwin, NT and require a physical presence, out-posting and remote work are not available for these positions.
These are designated positions and will require you to meet all Border Force Officer essential qualifications. If successful for one of these positions, you will be required to:
- be operationally ready (by meeting and sustaining the medical, fitness and psychometric requirements necessary for a role)
- be a sworn officer (through subscribing the ABF oath or affirmation)
- be uniformed
- maintain essential and role-specific qualifications
- work outside of business hours, including weekends (overtime or flex)
- participate in and be available for a restriction on-call roster (an allowance applies)
- complete Operational Safety Training and be willing to carry and use personal defence equipment, including a firearm, if required
- undertake regional and interstate travel
- work with high risk and/or challenging clients
- work in remote or regional areas
- work in challenging environmental conditions (such as hot, cold, humid, wet or dry)
- ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Driver’s Licence
- ability to obtain and maintain and Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC).
Desirable requirements or the ability to obtain and maintain:
- First Aid qualification
- 4WD vehicle training
- Elements of Shipboard Safety (ESS) certificate
- Marine radio qualification
- ABF vessels deckhand endorsements
- Coxswain qualification
- Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET).
These positions are in child-related employment. It is an offence under legislation of – Care and Protection of Children Act 2007 (NT) – for a person convicted of certain offences to apply for child-related employment.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the position you must be an Australian Citizen.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and:
- ABF Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC).
- Home Affairs Workers will also be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.
In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, which will be determined by the delegate as necessary.
