ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Supported by the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health at Sunway University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Internews will conduct a comprehensive stakeholder mapping of the current communications landscape of planetary health and map global stakeholders. Internews will do a thorough desk review of the existing research on the demand for planetary health information at a global level. The objective of the research is to identify risks, opportunities, challenges, and best practice in planetary health communications across traditional and social media and emerging communications technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI). The study will additionally examine the wide breadth of research that Internews has previously conducted on the demand for health information.

AI will be looked at specifically to understand how producers of planetary health information leverage the tool and how the tool can be used to create content and its overall quality. The analysis will explore the challenges faced by the producers of planetary health information and will offer recommendations on how to improve the quality, frequency, and accuracy of planetary health information from a global perspective. Considering this, the study is concerned with the following research questions:

  1. Stakeholder Analysis:
    • Who are the relevant stakeholders in planetary health communication, and how do they currently communicate?
    • What are the challenges, weaknesses, and opportunities in their current communication strategies?
  2. Communication Improvement
    • How could these stakeholders improve the way they communicate planetary health information, and what changes and support would they need to communicate more effectively?
  3. Audience Engagement
    • Who consumes planetary health information, and what are their habits, preferences, and needs do they have?
    • What barriers and enablers influence effective communication both with current key audiences and reaching audiences which currently have no engagement with planetary health?

The research will be conducted over the course of five months. Research activities will include desk research and Key Expert Interviews. The study will result in the delivery of four documents (see ‘Deliverables’ section below) that will help to inform the development of a global communications strategy for the Planetary Health Roadmap and Action Plan Working Group (CWG) of the Planetary Health Alliance.

The research will explore how these platforms intersect with each other as an enabling or inhibiting factor for information dissemination and audience engagement to promote planetary health.

A further step will be to analyze existing research on planetary health information consumption to identify patterns, preferences, and gaps. The goal of this desk review will be to understand the consumption habits and needs of planetary health information and to extrapolate any findings around demand-side health information behavior that would be helpful to understanding the planetary health information environment.
