5Rights Foundation is a policy and advocacy organisation that works towards realising enforceable, statutory regulation and positive change across technology products and services to protect the rights and welfare of children and young people online.​

We exist to build the digital world that young people deserve, allowing them to engage online creatively, knowledgeably, and fearlessly. ​

Our small team works globally for real-world impact on behalf of and with young people, pioneering change in how the digital world works, through shaping legislation, regulatory frameworks, and industry standards.​

5Rights has been a pioneer for children’s rights in the digital world, across our 3 goals:​

    • Global standards for children’s data protection: we supported the development and introduction of the Age-Appropriate Design Code in the UK, which has already had an impact on how digital services treat children and is inspiring similar efforts in other jurisdictions. We are the sponsor of a similar Code in California.​
    • Child-Centred Design: our work ranges from groundbreaking research into how design of digital services puts children at risk to supporting the creation of a new international industry standard for child-centred design. We advocate intensively for requirements for high standards of safety, privacy and security by design and default in key regional and national legislation.​
    • Children’s Rights: we worked with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child to draft and see adopted a new international agreement that makes explicit – for the first time – that children’s rights apply in the digital world. We have published a Toolkit for making this goal a reality, endorsed by organisations and leaders from around the world.

The Role

As a key member of our international advocacy team, you’ll be at the forefront of our work towards a digital world that has children’s rights at its heart. You will play a pivotal role in identifying opportunities for advocacy and analysing international press, social media, and policy landscapes affecting children’s rights in the digital environment. Under the guidance of our International Advocacy Manager, you’ll craft outreach and policy materials and produce high-quality briefings, position papers, and reports, ensuring our messages resonate with policymakers and partners worldwide.

​Key Responsibilities

  • ​Monitor and analyse international press and social media, as well as institutional developments in tech and children’s rights, to identify opportunities and inform international advocacy efforts.
  • ​Develop and maintain our database of key international stakeholders, policy and issue trackers, calendar, filing system and other project management tools.
  • ​Draft outreach materials (such as emails to policymakers and partners) and manage dissemination under the supervision of the International Advocacy Manager.
  • ​Draft briefings, position papers, consultation responses, reports, etc., in line with 5Rights positions and strategy, ensuring content is highly professional, thorough, and targeted to the audience and purpose.
  • ​Produce content for website and social media and manage International Advocacy communication channels under the supervision of the International Advocacy Manager and Communications team, ensuring content is accurate, up-to-date, timely, relevant and engaging.
  • ​Support coordination with partners and civil society coalitions and with all colleagues in our policy and communication teams in London, the US and Brussels to ensure full integration and alignment of our work.
  • ​Support with the preparation, management, and logistics of 5Rights events​
  • ​Attend meetings, conferences and other events. ​

ESSENTIAL skills and attributes

  • ​Knowledge of the international digital policy landscape.
  • ​A strong understanding of international policymaking and processes, as well as the international advocacy landscape.
  • ​Excellent communicator with experience in creating powerful assets and building positive relationships across cultures.
  • ​Excellent organisation skills, with experience managing events and projects.
  • ​Enjoys managing multiple assignments simultaneously, as well as working at pace and to tight deadlines, ensuring accurate, high-quality output.
  • ​Excellent spoken and written English. Other languages are an advantage.
  • ​A commitment to our values and mission. ​

DESIRABLE skills and attributes

  • ​1-2 years of prior experience in a similar role.
  • ​Knowledge of children’s rights and the challenges they face in the digital environment.
  • ​Experience managing social media channels.
  • ​Creative skills (e.g. graphic design) for the production of social media materials.
  • ​Strong networking skills.

Practical details​

We are offering an initial six-month remote work contract in the UK or Belgium, with the possibility of full-time employment after a satisfactory review; the salary is £22,400-24,200 (for UK) or €31600- €34200 (for Belgium, including benefits). Candidates should be prepared to work flexible hours across different time zones.

First-round interviews will be held over Zoom. As part of our recruitment process, shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a written task that will take 1 hour to complete.​
