The ECPAT Global Boys Initiative team is looking for a new colleague to help deliver a range of policy, communications and advocacy initiatives across the world.

ABOUT ECPAT INTERNATIONAL

ECPAT International is a global network of civil society organisations dedicated to ending the sexual exploitation of children (SEC) in all its manifestations. This includes the exploitation of children in prostitution, in the context of digital environments, in the context of trafficking of children for sexual purposes, the sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism and some forms of child, early and forced marriage. The ECPAT Network currently consists of 134 members working as independent organisations or coalitions in 110 countries.

The ECPAT International Secretariat coordinates the global work of the organisation and is based in Bangkok, Thailand. The Secretariat designs and implements global and regional level programmes and undertakes programming, campaigning, advocacy and research to facilitate a range of network initiatives.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

In 2022, ECPAT began exploring the positive potential of online gaming communities to support children and young people, in particular boys to seek advice and support in the face of sexual abuse and exploitation. This initiative brought together the unique expertise of ECPAT in the sexual abuse and exploitation of boys, and sexual exploitation in and through digital environments. We wanted to explore our hypothesis with experts from across the sectors, with the ultimate goal of identifying and developing practical tools for the online gaming sector and civil society. This resulted in a series of 3 expert roundtables held in London in 2022, New York in 2023 and Seoul in 2024.

Considering the learnings gathered by ECPAT International, the programme aims to harness the potential of online gaming for gender-sensitive child safety and help-seeking behaviors. This programme wants to bring gender-sensitive child safety perspective in the design of games, by co-developing and strengthening the capacity of online gaming companies to design games that actively challenge rigid gender norms and ideas of masculinity. This means co-developing an initial pilot training with game developers and trust and safety teams of selected partner gaming companies to support them in designing games that intentionally promote healthy forms of masculinity, including help-seeking behaviors among boys.

OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSIGNMENT

Support the design and delivery of the strategy of ECPAT International to ensure online gaming environments are gender-sensitive and safe for children, strengthening the capacity of ECPAT International to work with the online gaming sector and other civil society organisations to raise awareness, advocate and support initiatives that promote help-seeking behaviours for children in online gaming environments.
