The Product Development Services organization within Mission Systems Central Engineering Services is currently searching for a Mechanical & Electrical Design Support Manager to join our team. This position will have cognizance over Vergennes, VT, Colorado Springs, CO, Fairfield, CA , and Simpsonville, SC designers & drafters. Remote candidates will be considered, however essential travel may be required. 

This MiS Mechanical & Electrical Design Manager will lead a team of technical designers and support the development of highly complex mechanical and electrical assemblies for use in extremely reliable aviation and communication equipment. This individual will be responsible for the successful leadership of design support personnel and for ensuring the successful implementation of design processes and standards throughout multiple locations. 

Hardware Design Managers within MiS Central Engineering Services often lead and participate in highly complex projects and activities related to the integration of heritage businesses. These projects may include changes, upgrades, and updates to our tools, systems, documents, processes, and procedures. These high visibility projects are critical to the growth, development, and integration of Mission Systems. Successful candidates will possess strong project management skills. 

The Electrical & Mechanical Design Support Manager will work in close collaboration with Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Product Development Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Configuration Management and other enterprise organizations to deliver optimal design solutions and will assist in the enhancement of streamlined product development processes. 

Job Responsibilities: 

  • Lead a team of technical MCAD designers responsible for the design and documentation of new or modified mechanical designs at several Mission Systems locations
  • Lead several ECAD designers that provide PCB support specifically for Vergennes, VT 
  • Effectively manage daily operations required to meet schedules and resolve complex problems 
  • Oversees and reviews the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of required documentation
  • Ensures that there are appropriate design tools in place to facilitate work
  • Develops and administers schedules, work plans, and performance requirements
  • Leads and/or participates in design related integration projects, activities, and threads
  • Acts as an adviser to the business units regarding tasks, projects, and operations
  • Delegates work to exempt or non-exempt employees
  • Responsible for workforce planning to ensure the efficient operation of the function
  • Responsible for the selection and development of future employees and performance management and/or evaluation of current employees
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of technical capability and process to ensure optimal and efficient reuse of controlled IP and the sharing of controlled technical information
  • Ensure the technical interfacing and communication to project development teams and direct and subcontract staff
  • May be responsible for establishing and ensuring adherence to budgets
  • Investigate quality escapes, identify root cause issues and implement corrective actions

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Typically requires University Degree and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 12 years of relevant experience
  • U.S. Citizenship Required
  • Knowledge in Mechanical Hardware design fundamentals 
  • Experience with and general understanding of design methodologies 
  • Fluent in Product Configuration Structures, BOMs and Engineering Change processes 
  • Familiar with relevant design tools (Siemens NX, Solidworks) 
  • Experience working with the Product Data Management (PDM) tools: Enovia, TeamCenter, SEPDM, Windchill 
  • Strong project management skills and experience 
  • Knowledge of the entire product development lifecycle 
  • Ability to construct mechanical designs using Model Based Definition with full PMI 
  • Strong technical acumen with the use of CAD tools with ability to train others 
  • Knowledge of ECAD/MCAD collaboration techniques 
  • Knowledge of the ECAD PWB layout process & electrical component library management using ECAD tools 
  • Knowledge of the design of cables and harness with wire routing capability within the CAD assembly 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Knowledge of GD&T application principals with certification preferred 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills 
  • Experienced problem solver 
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize work 
  • High degree of attention to detail 
  • Ability to motivate and unleash energy in others while instilling a sense of urgency 
  • Ability to support critical program design reviews (PDR, CDR, etc.)

The salary range for this role is 96,000 USD – 200,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
