We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Dog Welfare and Breeding Manager to join a well-known not-for-profit organisation based here in Cork. This leadership role is critical to the delivery and welfare of the service dogs. This position will oversee the Dog Care And Breeding department. You will be responsible for the breeding stock, the well-being of puppies, dogs in training, working assistance and retired dogs, as well as managing and developing the Breeding Programme.This a full-time, permanent that requires local and national travel, and will suit someone with a background in dog handling, veterinary nursing or animal welfare.Hours: 37.5 with flexibility to work weekends.Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage, develop, and support the Dog Care and Welfare Team, including performance reviews and CPD activities for staff.
  • Ensure all well-being needs of dogs in the programmes are met, focusing on the five welfare domains (nutrition, environment, health, mental state, and behaviour).
  • Implement and monitor robust infection control measures to prevent disease.
  • Oversee the size, diversity, and genetics of the breeding colony to meet operational needs.
  • Engage with international partners and external providers to improve efficiency, secure external dog supply, and contribute to global assistance dog initiatives.
  • Drive research and development projects, process enhancements, and feedback-based improvements across staff, volunteers, and stakeholders.
  • Recruit, train and support volunteers involved in dog care, breeding, whelping, and puppy socialisation activities.
  • Ensure accurate data reporting, effective stock control within budgets, and adherence to HR and Health and Safety processes.

Requirements:

  • A qualification in veterinary nursing or training to a similar or higher standard.
  • Formal training or qualifications in canine breeding/genetics.
  • Ability to engage with and manage teams within an operational setting.
  • Experience delivering change within an organisation or workplace.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.
  • Proven track record of consistently meeting and exceeding goals.
  • Full clean driving licence is essential.
  • You will be required to be on call, outside of normal business hours, which may include coming on site to deal with any breeding or dog related issues.
