  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis (in English) on the Congolese Diaspora in Belgium adopting a historical and/or sociolinguistic approach. In doing so, you will conduct qualitative fieldwork in Kinshasa, Brussels and/or the Denderstreek (the axis Aalst-Denderleeuw-Ninove). Your entry into the material will be language use in the community, both in the present and in the past, but you will also be invited to bring in your own interests and insights into the PhD project.
  • You will organise your own PhD research and report on your progress regularly, in collaboration with your supervisor.

  • You will also communicate your findings to non-scientific audiences.
  • You will contribute to attracting national and international research funding.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for The Faculty of Arts.
  • You will participate in ongoing research projects and activities at the Faculty of Arts, in particular the research lines of History or Linguistics.
  • You will collaborate with colleagues at the Great Lakes of Africa Centre of the Institute of Development Policy (IOB) at the University of Antwerp and with partner institutes in Africa.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in History, Linguistics, Transcultural Studies or in another relevant discipline.
  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s

. * You are willing and able to adopt an interdisciplinary perspective and consider multiple research methods, such as oral history interviews, participant observation and archival research.

  • You are fluent in English. Knowledge of French, Dutch and other languages spoken in DR Congo is an asset.
  • Affinity with the Congolese community in migration to and within Belgium is an asset.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
