Global Rights Compliance (GRC) is an international human rights law foundation specializing in international humanitarian & criminal law.

GRC has been resent in Ukraine since 2015 where we work with the OPG, law enforcement agencies, and CSOs to support the documentation and investigation of international crimes to bring about accountability. GRC co-leads the Atrocity Crimes Advisory Group (ACA), initiated by the US, the EU, and the UK to aid Ukrainian law enforcement agencies. Special expert groups known as Mobile Justice Teams (MJTs) are composed of legal specialists who support the Prosecutor General’s Office and regional prosecutor’s offices, working closely with investigators and prosecutors to provide support in prosecuting international crimes, advising & assisting in the documentation, investigation, case building, and prosecution.

MJTs operate throughout Ukraine in areas of interest to the OPG and have acquired an intimate knowledge of the conflict operating environment, and built trust-based relationships with all criminal justice system actors, relevant governmental bodies, CSOs, and international partners offering a strong blend of technical expertise and knowledge of the Ukraine context/conflict.

Duty Station: Remote based

Contract Duration: Starting ASAP until the end of November 2024.

GRC is seeking to develop a StoryMap using ArcGIS software to effectively present data on a specific project aimed at documenting starvation-related conduct in Ukraine. This StoryMap will integrate visual design, interactive maps, data visualization, and narrative storytelling to communicate key findings to various stakeholders, including policymakers, international organizations, civil society, and the general public.

The Data, Visual Design, and Storytelling Specialist will be responsible for developing an interactive and compelling StoryMap using ArcGIS software which will visually represent project data and findings in a clear and engaging manner, utilizing storytelling techniques to ensure key messages are communicated effectively.

Key objectives include:

  • Design and develop an interactive ArcGIS StoryMap to visualize and narrate the findings of the project.
  • Integrate data visualization elements (e.g., charts, maps, infographics) into the StoryMap.
  • Use visual storytelling to present complex data in a simplified, accessible, and compelling way.
  • Collaborate with GRC’s legal, data, and communication teams to ensure alignment of the StoryMap with the project’s objectives and narrative.

The Role

  • Review project data and objectives, provided by GRC’s legal team, as necessary, to produce an initial outline document and wireframes.
  • Collaborate with GRC’s teams to gain a comprehensive understanding of the data that needs to be visualized.
  • Conceptualize, design, and develop a ArcGIS StoryMap, integrating multiple data sources, to create interactive maps.
  • Structure the StoryMap to support both a narrative format and dynamic data exploration by users.
  • Present visual evidence in a compelling visual narrative format.
  • Develop interactive elements that allow users to explore the data (e.g., filters, layers, hover-over data points).
  • Collaborate with GRC’s communication and legal teams to develop the narrative, ensuring it complements the data being presented.
  • Integrate textual content, images, videos, and other multimedia elements to enrich the storytelling aspect of the StoryMap.
  • Integrate feedback from GRC’s legal and communication teams to refine and finalize the product and ensure the alignment of the StoryMap with the project’s objectives and narrative.

Anticipated Timeline and Deliverables

20 October – Conceptual Design Document: A detailed outline of the StoryMap, including the data visualization and storytelling approach.

20 November – ArcGIS StoryMap: A fully developed and functioning StoryMap hosted on ArcGIS Online.

27 November – GRC feedback integrated into the StoryMap.

Your Background

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in data visualisation, GIS, or visual design.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS software, specifically ArcGIS StoryMaps.
  • Proven experience in developing StoryMaps or similar interactive visual storytelling platforms.
  • Strong experience with visual storytelling, including integrating multimedia (videos, images, text) into interactive platforms.
  • Experience working with complex data types, preferably in the field of human rights, international law, or related areas.
