The International Institute for Human Security (IIHS) is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Data Hub Intern to join our global volunteer team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to an impactful project aimed at providing open access data and interactive visualizations on global security metrics. The insights generated will help drive data-driven analysis and be accessible to researchers, policymakers, and the public.

Position: Human Security Data Hub Intern (non-paid volunteer)
Time Commitment: Approximately 10 hours per week
Duration: 1-year commitment (until December 31, 2025)
Application Deadline: February 15, 2025
Location: Remote

What You’ll Do:

As a Data Hub Intern, you will be responsible for:

  • Collecting data from free and open-access sources related to human security topics.
  • Organizing, analyzing, and curating datasets for integration into the IIHS Data Hub.
  • Creating interactive visualizations using tools such as Google Data Studio or Tableau Public.
  • Collaborating with IIHS leadership to design a user-friendly and accessible data hub for global audiences.
  • Meeting project milestones as outlined over the 1-year term.

Purpose of the Project:
To develop an interactive data hub with visualizations and open-access data sets focused on global security metrics, enabling public access and analysis for enhanced understanding of human security issues worldwide.

Required Skills:

  • Familiarity with Google Data Studio or Tableau Public for data visualization.
  • Strong analytical and research skills for sourcing and organizing data.
    Basic knowledge of global security, human security, or development topics is an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage project milestones.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience with data cleaning and transformation tools (e.g., Excel, Google Sheets) is a plus.
