Our Water Division is experiencing significant growth, presenting the opportunity for a Dams Engineer based in our Melbourne office. This position is crucial for supporting ongoing and new projects in the dams and hydropower market with a focus on Victorian dams while providing support to the broader dams and hydropower team throughout Australia and overseas.

About the role:

As a Dams Engineer, the role is integral to the contribution of the Stantec business goals by providing technical skills in the specialist area of dams engineering. Working alongside and reporting into the broader dams and hydropower team, which is managed nationally and not state-wise like some of our competitors, not only will you be mentored and given the opportunity to flourish, you will also provide valuable support to the project manager/team leader to ensure that project outcomes meet both the client and Stantec expectations.

Whilst all applications will be accepted, Stantec is keen to hear from interested individuals with 3 to 6 years’ experience who are wanting to expand their career with a bunch of highly reputable professionals in the dams space.

What does a day in the life of a Dams Engineer looks like?

  • Exposure to world-class dams projects both locally and globally for a variety of dam types, including earth embankment and concrete structures.

  • Performing engineering work under some supervision requiring the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to carry out a sequence of related engineering tasks such as preparing proposals, providing field work support where required, completing design and analysis, and preparing reports in accordance with established codes and standards.

  • Working in a team environment with industry leading professionals from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.

  • Depending on current skillset or career development focus, project work may include foundation analysis, dam stability assessment (earth and concrete), hydraulic analysis (overflows, spillway channels and pipework), dam failure consequence assessments, dam safety reviews and risk assessments, feasibility studies, site inspections and investigations, and dam upgrade optioneering and design.

  • Interfacing with multiple disciplines to develop concept, preliminary and detailed designs.

  • Supporting project managers/team leaders in preparing for workshops and meetings.

  • Providing construction oversight where required.

To be successful for this role you’ll present:

  • Tertiary Qualification in relevant Engineering field working towards applying for Chartered (CPEng) status.

  • With 3 to 6 years professional working experience, ideally with a focus on dam safety and/or dam engineering.

  • Solid report writing with the ability to tell a compelling story.

  • Proficient skills of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and MS Teams.

  • The ability to apply professional concepts and expand skills while performing various phases of engineering work related to water infrastructure, in particular dams and hydropower.

  • A desire to engage in all facets of dam engineering, for a range of dam types.

  • Development into a key member of the dams team, supporting colleagues in project related work.
