Job description

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Engineering to lead a team of software engineers in a cutting-edge clinical research project focused on Motor Neuron Disease (MND). This role is pivotal in advancing the PrecisionALS Programme, a €10 million multidisciplinary initiative aimed at revolutionizing drug development for neurodegenerative diseases through data-driven and precision medicine approaches.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic & Technical Leadership:

Lead the design and implementation of the technology roadmap for the PrecisionALS Programme, focusing on data architecture, machine learning, and clinical data integration.

  • Review and enhance the existing technology platform, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of clinical research.
  • Oversee the migration of the platform to a cloud environment, likely Azure, while maintaining robust data governance and GDPR compliance.
  • Data Management & Integration:
  • Drive the development of the Patient Data Platform (PDP) to support data-intensive clinical research, including integration of medical device data and future-proofing the infrastructure.
  • Identify and incorporate new data sources, optimizing the platform for performance, security, and usability.
  • Team Leadership:
  • Lead and mentor a team of software engineers and researchers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance environment.
  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators (PIs) and stakeholders to align technology solutions with clinical research goals.
  • Research & Development:
  • Partner with the ADAPT Centre and other research leaders to coordinate the ICT research programme, contributing to data analytics, machine learning, and AI innovations within the clinical domain.
  • Ensure the delivery of key project milestones, maintaining a focus on innovation, quality, and timeliness.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; a PhD is desirable but not essential.
  • Technical Expertise:
  • Extensive experience in technical architecture, data management, and software development.
  • Proficiency with cloud platforms (preferably Azure), DevOps, and data security best practices.
  • Strong understanding of GDPR and data privacy in research contexts.
  • Leadership & Management:
  • Proven track record in leading technical teams and delivering complex projects on time.
  • Experience in clinical or data-intensive research environments is a plus.
  • Communication & Collaboration:
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong collaborative skills, with experience working in multidisciplinary teams.
