Job description

Children’s Health Ireland are seeking to fill 2 Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Medicine posts:

  • Post 1 will be on a permanent basis, 33 hours per week at Children’s Health Ireland and 4 hours per week at The National Maternity Hospital
  • Post 2 will be on a permanent basis, 37 hours per week at Children’s Health Ireland.

Purpose of Role:

The consultant will participate in the development of specialist paediatric palliative care in Ireland, including the development of training programmes for doctors working in the area.

The post holder will support the expansion of the service thus helping ensure that all children with LLCs attending CHI will have access to the PPC Team/Service as needed. Increasing the number of Consultants on the team will facilitate better links with, and integration into, areas within CHI where there are higher numbers of children with LLCs (for example PICU, NICU, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Cardiac ward, Metabolic Unit etc)

The consultant will act as a resource to the community based clinical nurse co-ordinators for children with life-limiting conditions who have been appointed regionally to support children with life limiting conditions ensuring best possible care in the home.

The post holder will participate in a national advisory service as outlined the National Model of Care for Paediatric Healthcare Services (2016) and with Clinical governance and operational arrangements for supporting a model of care for children with life limiting conditions towards the end of life in the community in Ireland (2020). This includes participating in a national advisory on call rota accessed via Children’s Health Ireland.

The post includes a sessional commitment to the National Maternity Hospital as a consultation service to perinatal, foetal medicine and neonatology teams. The post holder will act as a resource to staff involved in caring for any foetus or neonate with a life limiting condition and their families including antenatal support, perinatal support and into bereavement

Eligibility Criteria

Professional Qualifications and Experience

Mandatory:

a) Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of Paediatrics and

b) Two years certified postgraduate training in paediatric palliative medicine, including three months working in Adult Palliative Medicine

The successful interviewee must be registered as a specialist in the relevant specialty on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland, within 180 days of the day of interview and before taking up appointment.

The Consultant must, at all times while continuing to hold office, continue to be registered with the Medical Council of Ireland. Documentary evidence of Medical Council Registration is required and must be produced annually to the Medical Administration Department within the Children’s Health Ireland.

Should the successful candidate not be registered as a Specialist at that time, the post may be offered to the next suitable candidate. Should no suitable candidate exist, a further recruitment process may be initiated.

Desirable Criteria:

Clinical fellowship, or specialist training, experience in Paediatric Palliative Medicine, national or international.

Essential:

  • Significant experience in clinical practice in delivery of acute unscheduled care at both local and national levels
  • Experienced clinician with credibility and the ability to command the respect of all clinical and non-clinical professionals

  • Demonstrate a knowledge and undertaking of the current governance structures and anticipated changes with the establishment of the new children’s hospital
  • Experience in reconfiguring acute services across organisations and regions
  • Demonstrate leadership and team management skills including the ability to manage his/her staff and service and work with multi-disciplinary team members
  • Experience of operating in complex and challenging environments
  • Knowledge of the Irish health sector, national health programmes and health reform agendas
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills
  • Effective change management skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Risk and issue management skills
  • Ability to recognise and respect the expertise of others and the contribution of team members and harness good teamwork and open contributions to enable the achievement of programme aims
  • Demonstrate evidence of effective planning and organisational skills including awareness of resource management
  • Have excellent computer skills, competencies and knowledge of hospital data/ information systems
