We are seeking to recruit a motivated and forward thinking Consultant to join our ENT and Head-Neck Surgery Consultant team. This is a permanent post with 10 programmed activities (PA’s). Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCS (or equivalent) who are on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register in Otolaryngology, Head-Neck Surgery or who will be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview. The applicant will be on the Full General Medical Council Register with a license to practice. In addition applicants should demonstrate within their application that they are fully trained in general Otolaryngology with a wide experience in Otology. The applicant will preferably have obtained a fellowship in Otology.

It is an exciting time at the Trust with our brand new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital due to open in October 2024 and we are looking for enthusiastic, innovative and progressive clinicians to shape and develop the department at our new site. The Trust has also recently become part of the Black Country and West Birmingham Integrated Care System and there will be opportunity to be involved in the design of regional services. The successful applicant may be timetabled for 2 PA’s (20%) of the job plan at one of our partner hospitals within the ICS with mutual agreement.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will join our growing team of 7 consultant ENT surgeons delivering elective and emergency care including contributing to a 1 in 6 emergency non-resident on-call rota. . This is a 10PA job and the appointee will be expected to deliver activity at both hospital sites. Birmingham Treatment center is the main site for outpatient elective activity and day case surgery. Sandwell General Hospital is the admitting site for on-call, paediatrics and inpatient lists. This will move to MMUH later this year. The successful candidate will be supported to develop and progress the otology service. The Department is further supported by an excellent Audiology department who work closely with the ENT Consultants to provide a broad range of services.

Job responsibilities

The single-site Acute Hospital will benefit from co-located specialist services which will support the new Emergency Department with dedicated imaging facility and Assessment Units. It will provide state-of-the-art treatment and care for patients from Sandwell and across the region and will become the civic heart of the area and a point of pride for the community. ENT emergency services, paediatrics and elective inpatient surgery will be based at MMUH. Elective clinics, day case surgery (including 23 hour provision) and in office procedures will be based at the BTC (Birmingham Treatment Center).

Education

An interest in medical education is welcome and the successful candidates will be encouraged to take on an additional role as an educator. Active engagement in quality improvement activity and research is expected and as well as an active post graduate teaching program, the department is also committed to training the undergraduates from the medical schools of University of Birmingham and Aston University, Birmingham.

Research

The University of Birmingham would like to support research by offering two protected research PAs to recently appointed (within 18 months) consultants. Sessions will be prioritised for those with a commitment to research and an interest in an area of research that maps to University of Birmingham strengths. Support will be assessed on a competitive basis.

Qualifications
Essential

  • Basic Medical Degree
  • FRCS (ORL-HNS) or Equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist register for Otolaryngology (or within 6 months of CCT or CESR at the time of interview)

Desirable

  • Higher Degree

Clinical Skills and Experience
Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in ENT with sub-specialty training
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of acute ENT emergencies and the care of elective ENT patients

  • Fellowship in Otology
