About the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR):

The Indiana Department of Revenue team has over 700 staff members from 13 locations across Indiana. We work collaboratively with the Indiana Governor’s office, the General Assembly, state agencies, individuals, business owners, corporations, tax practitioners, and tax program participants to administer Indiana’s tax laws. DOR administers over 65 tax types and annually processes nearly $21 billion of tax revenue. Our mission is to serve Indiana by administering tax laws fairly, securely, and efficiently.

Salary:

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $53,222. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview:

The Communications Specialist supports the team and Assistant Director by executing communications plans created by the team. You will ensure that communications reflect DOR style and branding guidelines and are completed on time. You will help develop publication ideas and provide editorial feedback to keep projects and tasks on track. You may collaborate with subject matter experts across the agency to tie up loose ends. The scope of work is broad and touches all areas of the agency.

You will have an internal impact by contributing to the overall success of the agency and ensuring team members are informed and engaged. You will have an external impact by providing messaging, education, and resources for customers and stakeholders with many different needs.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are:

  • Collaborate with team members to produce and publish communications.

  • Provide feedback on and corrections to content for internal and external audiences.

  • Create and edit content assigned by the Assistant Director of Communications and team.

  • Execute communications plans across multiple channels.

  • Evaluate and provide feedback on the congruence of the team’s collective voice for different audiences.

  • Critically evaluate the status of project deliverables and communicate them to the team.

  • Establish, maintain, and follow the Communications team’s standard operating procedures and Style and Branding Guide. Follow other agency-wide standard operating procedures.

  • Execute short- and long-term goals to support the DOR’s strategic plans.

  • Manage multiple priorities and deliverables.

  • Other projects may be assigned, providing skill and professional development opportunities.

What You’ll Need for Success:

Credentials:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Creative Writing, English, Journalism and/or Telecommunications.

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience (minimum).

    Other Qualifications:

  • Writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Ability and willingness to adhere to standardized processes and official style guide.

  • Ability to execute a communications plan, including the ability to stick to deadlines.

  • Ability to effectively manage internal stakeholder expectations, mainly Communications team members.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency and Communications teammates.

  • Ability to express the status of deliverables in virtual and in-person meetings with people on the Communications team and other internal stakeholders.

  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks, shuffle priorities, and communicate changes to the team and/or Assistant Director of Communications.

  • Ability to interpret data to participate in the team’s ability to adjust approaches to maximize communications effectiveness.

  • Ability to research, question, and analyze complex topics.

  • Some knowledge of “plain language.”

  • Some knowledge of delivering mass communications (internal and external).

  • Some knowledge of how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Some knowledge of social media platforms and how to operate them.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
