Background

SoCha LLC is preparing a proposal to support an international civil society organization in conducting an end of project evaluation of a multi-country programme to promote sustainability in global value chains. The programme is active on 4 continents in 17 countries and 7 value chains (cocoa, coffee, tea, palm oil, cotton/textiles, gold, and food products). Interventions focus on advocacy, civil society strengthening, and value chain development.

SoCha is seeking a senior-level subject matter expert in civil-society-led, evidence-based advocacy, especially for inclusive, sustainable value chain development. The subject matter expert should have evaluation and/or research experience. The expert will support the design of data collection tools; conduct a desk review and online and in-person key informant interviews, focus groups, and workshops; conduct field visits in one or several countries; analyze transcripts; and contribute to reports and presentations to the client.

The expert will work closely with the evaluation team lead and SoCha HQ team. The position and the assignment are contingent on SoCha being awarded the contract for the evaluation.

Role and Responsibilities

The senior-level subject matter expert will

  1. Support the design of data collection tools.
  2. Conduct a desk review of programme documentation.
  3. Conduct online key informant interviews, focus groups, and workshops with programme stakeholders.
  4. Conduct field visits in one or several programme countries including key informant interviews, focus groups and workshops with programme stakeholders.
  5. Analyze interview and focus group transcripts.
  6. Contribute to reports and presentations to the client.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  1. Master’s or PhD in agriculture, business development, development studies, or a related field.
  2. Minimum 5 years of experience working in national and/or global advocacy for economic development, especially supply chain development, and/or evaluating and researching advocacy-related programmes and projects.
  3. Experience conducting qualitative data collection including key informant interviews, focus group discussions, or workshops.
  4. Experience working or conducting research in one or several of the following countries: Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia; Honduras, Peru; Egypt; Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Sierra Leone. Additional experience in any of the following countries is a plus: Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda, Zambia.
  5. Professional proficiency in written and spoken English. Professional proficiency in French and/or Spanish is a plus.

Duration and Location

  1. Ca. 40 days between May and December 2025.
  2. Remote, with max. two-week field visits to one or several countries in September/October 2025.
