Location: One of Greenpeace Africa(GPAF) Operational Office ( South Africa, Cameroon, Senegal, Kenya) is preferred but flexible to other locations within Africa, as GPAF implements a hybrid work location model with work-from-home being the main base of our work location

Purpose of the Role

Pan-African Political Strategist will oversee our political strategy and provide the organisation with an analytical overview of the Pan-African political and socio-economic landscape especially in seeking leverage for our campaigning work and steering strategic interventions by our campaigns across the continent.

Main duties

Political strategy analysis, development and implementation

  • Lead the development and implementation of the political components of our campaigns across Africa and globally as well as advise on the legislative and socio-economic elements.
  • Develop scenarios and political roadmaps for the campaigns and project teams in support of the global strategies.
  • Contribute to the definition of positions on relevant issues and development of global political policies at Greenpeace taking into account Greenpeace Africa’s approved strategic direction.
  • Analyze the existing Greenpeace Africa strategy political priorities to prioritize GPAF engagement from a Pan-African perspective across sub-Saharan Africa and implement this strategy.
  • Lobby key political targets/institutions, influence the development and implementation of environmental legislation, and meet campaign and organisational objectives where relevant across Africa.
  • Monitor and evaluate the success and learning from our political strategy to ensure the success of campaigns, the successful implementation of Greenpeace Africa’s approved strategy and transfer of knowledge.

Representation, Networking, and Relationship Development

  • Represent Greenpeace Africa and/or lead delegations to local/national/ regional/international political fora, specifically on the campaign issues as assigned by the Programme Director and on pan African issues aligned with the Greenpeace Africa political priorities identified in the strategy. Where relevant, give advice/briefings to other representatives so that they are able to effectively represent Greenpeace Africa.
  • Develop, maintain, and nurture extensive contacts and relationships with all relevant political bodies and civil society partners in order to build effective networks and partnerships that promote our campaign and organisational strategic political objectives, maintaining an organisational contact database.
  • Proactively identify and act upon opportunities to establish new internal and external networks.
  • Manage and maintain an effective contact database to ensure all relationships are captured and can be shared internally.

Communications and Researching

  • Create reports, briefings, updates, and talking points with campaign input and communication team review to ensure consistent messaging.
  • Stay informed on relevant environmental, legislative, and political developments to enable effective Greenpeace Africa responses.
  • Conduct research and analysis to develop or refine political strategies as needed.
  • Research and analyze key topics to develop new policy positions for GPAF in coordination with the global campaign.
  • Identify political research needs for the campaign and Greenpeace Africa, and commission and oversee external consultants when necessary.
  • Identify key political moments regionally and globally, and allocate budgets accordingly.
  • Outsource business and political intelligence based on campaign needs and budget.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, International Relations, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • 5+ years Minimum proven expertise and knowledge in high level political
  • negotiations in Africa.
  • Minimum of three years proven expertise in policy development in Africa.
  • Experience within a campaigning organisation is desirable but not essential
  • Knowledge related to climate change is desirable but not essential
  • Experience related to campaigning is desirable but not essential
