Position DescriptionThe Generation Engineering department in ESB Engineering and Major Projects is the centre of engineering for ESB’s generation businesses and provides consultancy services in generation technology for external and international clients. This includes optimising the long-term performance of ESB’s Generation Assets through process performance optimisation and portfolio long term asset management, as well as continuously driving improvements in overhaul management, safety, technical and engineering standards, and the delivery of new power plant projects as part of the ESB Net Zero by 2040 Strategy.The Pressure Parts & Renewable Gases Manager will lead the Pressure Parts & Renewable Gases team within Generation Engineering in support of these objectives, and in support of wider requirements within the ESB Group.This team provides the engineering and asset management services for boiler plant and pressure parts associated with Generation and Trading’s portfolio fleet.The team is also responsible for the development of a Centre of Engineering Excellence for Renewable Gases, particularly in relation to hydrogen and biomethane.Key Responsibilities

  • Management of the provision of specialist expertise, governance and engineering support on all aspects relating to Boiler Plant and Pressure Parts for the existing generation portfolio and provide the same expertise for advice, design, support and recommendations to project teams involved in new design for ESB projects and external clients.
  • Responsibility for the development and approval of Inspection and Test Plans for boiler plant and pressure parts
  • Lead Boiler Plant and Pressure Parts Engineering Excellence in ESB, providing process engineering knowledge, asset management and project management to provide engineering solutions to commercially optimise existing assets and support the growing pipeline of low carbon and renewable projects.
  • Adapt a proactive role to the management of Pressure Part issues and set Technical Management Policy
  • Take a lead role in ensuring compliance to all statutory, legislative and licence requirements as they relate to Boiler Plant and Pressure Parts systems and issues.
  • Investigate all Boiler and Pressure Part plant related issues and incidents and provide advice on risk assessments of equipment
  • Provide input and challenge to Pressure Parts and Renewable Gases projects and works in terms of budgets, business cases, project briefs and boards as required.
  • Continue to develop and maintain a Centre of Engineering Excellence in relation to the generation, storage and distribution of renewable gases; particularly hydrogen and biomethane.
  • Acquire and maintain a high level of personal expertise to anticipate and cope with the range of Pressure Parts and Renewable Gases issues and developments that may arise over a portfolio of power plant and new projects.
  • Provision of engineering services and expertise in relation to flue gas cleaning.
  • Lead, empower and motivate the Pressure Parts and Renewable Gases team to achieve optimum performance and effectively liaise with the Generation Engineering Management Team to ensure the achievement of business objectives.
  • Build a strong Pressure Parts and Renewable Gases team with the required expertise in place to meet Generation Engineering requirements in the respective areas and provide coaching/mentoring as required.

Knowledge, Skills and ExperienceEssential

  • At least 10 years relevant work experience.
  • Significant knowledge of generating plant boilers, pressure systems and failure modes of same.
  • Experience of power plant operations and maintenance technologies, systems, procedures and practices.
  • Track record of achieving objectives.
  • Significant experience of working from own initiative, taking ownership of work/projects and motivating team members to deliver team objectives or projects.
  • Supervisory or management experience.
  • Ability to work and share knowledge and competencies within a team structure.
  • Flexibility, which is important in all aspects of the role, including travel.
  • A track record of innovation.
  • Proven Stakeholder Management Skillset.

Qualifications3rd level Mechanical Engineering qualification or equivalent and/or significant experience in the area of boiler plant, pressure parts and renewable gases.LocationThe position is based in ESB Engineering & Major Projects Head Office, Dublin Airport, Ireland and or East gate office, Little Island Co. Cork and will involve occasional travel both nationally and internationally.
