Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking two interns for the Sydney office. Ideally, interns will be available for three months beginning in early February 2025 through end of April 2025 (dates and schedule are flexible) with the possibility to extend.
Human Rights Watch in Australia is responsible for protecting and promoting the human rights of people around the world, including pushing for an end to human rights abuses and advocating for accountability and effective remedies where violations occur.
Interns will be offered a range of tasks that cover elements of the work carried out by both the Advocacy Department and Development and Outreach Department. Throughout the internship term, interns are offered the opportunity to participate in the collegial atmosphere of all aspects of daily Human Rights Watch Sydney office activities. When possible, interns are invited to join weekly HRW staff meetings, online meetings with global development colleagues, and to attend external HRW events, which could include donor meetings, receptions, or public briefings.
Responsibilities:
Each intern will have a variety of tasks across both Departments such as:
- Conducting background desk research and fact-checking;
- Assisting with the preparation of published materials, e.g. op-ed, dispatches, and press releases;
- Daily monitoring of news, current affairs, and press coverage and assisting in updating lists;
- Facilitating outreach tasks regarding human rights in the Asia region, with a particular focus on Australia;
- Utilizing databases for supporting with tasks relating to event planning;
- Supporting with fundraising and outreach events;
- Collaborating with the team to cultivate individual donors, foundations, and corporations, mainly based in Sydney and Melbourne; and
- Other projects may be assigned as they arise and when they match the intern’s interests.
Qualifications:
- This position is best suited for individuals interested in interning in a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization.
- Interns must be currently enrolled students for the duration of the internship;
- Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in international human rights;
- Experience with fundraising, media, social media, government relations, event planning, and Salesforce would be beneficial;
- Computer skills are strongly preferred.
