The Lead Engineer will be a member of the Advanced Design & Development team within Advanced Applications Engineering at GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy. The AD&D team supports the development of advanced nuclear applications through technical leadership on early phase projects and delivering high caliber analysis of complex, first-of-a-kind technologies. AD&D is an interdisciplinary group of problem-solvers with high aptitude and flexibility. The Lead Engineer is a self-starting professional that can operate with minimal supervision and possesses mastery of a discipline relevant to developing fluid or mechanical systems for nuclear reactors.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead and conduct calculations, design analyses, evaluations, and verifications for various advanced reactor safety and non-safety system functions.
  • Apply engineering knowledge and practical experience to the analysis, investigation, and solution of complex design problems and application issues.
  • Develop drawings and specifications to assure products can reliably meet all engineering and quality requirements.
  • Professionally respond to customer information requests, emergent plant issues, and audits.
  • Work proactively with interfacing system personnel through process procedure approvals, process qualification approvals, and non-conforming material disposition.
  • Support initiatives for new or improved plant components and system-level analyses.
  • Support GEH quality requirements defined in policies and procedures.
  • Creates design deliverables from conceptual requirements to detailed drawings at different phases of the project.
  • Performs system design activities including system design specifications, piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), logic diagrams, equipment sizing, and FMEA evaluations, and conducts relevant mechanical analysis.
  • Generates design and/or testing requirements and creates high quality technical reports and diagrams for review by both customers and regulators.
  • Provide knowledge and leadership in the development and implementation of integrated design processes pertaining to requirements management, requirements traceability, configuration management, change control principles, standards, and best practices through the design, licensing, construction, and decommissioning life of the NPP.
  • Conducts component and system integration with overall new nuclear plant design. All activities that span multiple components and systems that are concerned with how to integrate for maximum performance, operability, and design to cost.
  • Drive the identification of verification and validation (V&V) requirements at the system and component level.
  • Manages interface between systems, components, and project/product management organizations.
  • Developing specialized knowledge in their discipline. Serves as best practice/quality resource. Has awareness of latest technical developments in own area. Contributes towards strategy and policy development and ensure delivery within area of responsibility.
  • Uses judgment to make decisions or solve moderately complex tasks or problems in areas of operational/product management, manufacturing, technology, or engineering. Takes new perspective on existing solutions.
  • Uses technical experience and expertise for data analysis to support recommendations. Uses multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own function to arrive at decisions.
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. May lead small projects with moderate risks and resource requirements. Explains difficult or sensitive information; works to build consensus. Developing persuasion skills required to influence others on topics within field.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of science degree in mechanical, systems, or nuclear engineering.
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in a technical role
  • Minimum of 3 years of systems engineering experience

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The preferred work location for this role is at the GEH Headquarters in Wilmington, NC; but highly qualified (US based) remote candidates will be considered.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Proven oral / written communication and teamwork skills.
  • Prior experience in nuclear maintenance systems and reactor servicing.
  • Commercial Nuclear Power Plant Systems experience, Professional Engineering License, or Advanced Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform while challenged by multiple demands and changing priorities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including customer interface experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including a minimum of 2 years of experience as a lead or lead contributor on major projects.
  • Knowledge of nuclear plant systems and analyses techniques, commercial plant outages, and nuclear industry practices.
  • Experience with design, evaluation, and operation of nuclear power plant components, primarily NPP systems.
  • Prior experience in both systems engineering and component design.
  • A self-starter willing to take initiative and own design and development of new products

The base pay range for this position is $99k-140k. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for bonuses, such as a performance bonus/variable incentive compensation/equity. This position is expected to close on 8/31/2024.

The company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120%, or 130% of salary in certain areas.
