The agreed job plan comprises a total of 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week. This consists of 8.5 direct clinical care PAs (including on call commitment) and 1.5 supporting professional activity PAs. The job plan is subject to annual review with the Clinical Director.Elective activities for all consultants are planned on an equal basis using a rolling rota with 1:10 emergency duty. Over the whole rota, there is an average of 1.5 theatre lists, 1 clinic and 1 endoscopy session per week with a fixed session should the applicant wish to pursue private practice when not on emergency duty.The working day in theatre runs from 08.45 -1.00pm and 1.45pm-6.00pm, with a 30 minute break between the morning and afternoon session for all day lists.The detailed job plan will be subject to agreement between Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust and the appointee.Interview Date – 25.09.2024Main duties of the jobThe post- holder is also expected:1. To fully support the delivery and development of the Colorectal Service including Gynaecology Oncology service.2. To share responsibility for the colorectal service with the other Consultant Colorectal surgeons, including the day to day responsibility for the management of urgent colorectal cases.3. To ensure full submission of data to the Somerset database, in line with national recommendations.4. To participate with the other Consultant Surgeons in the management of the Department of Surgery.5. To demonstrate a firm commitment to clinical governance including participation in effective clinical audit and continuing medical education.6. To contribute to management within the Trust through the Directorate.7. To participate in all teaching programmes for medical staff, medical students andother hospital employees as required. There is an introductory teaching programme for the Foundation doctors in Surgery and the Consultant would be expected to participate in this. Time commitment would be less than 1hour per week. There is also some involvement in the teaching of nurses and health professionals involved in the care of colorectal patients. QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING
Essential

  • Primary medical qualification/MRCS or equivalent qualifications
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via
  • Current CCT or CESR(CP), or within 6 months of CCT/CESR
  • CESR
  • European Community Rights
  • An appropriate Higher Surgical Qualification
  • Wide knowledge and experience of Colorectal Surgery
  • JAG Accreditation for Colonoscopy

Desirable

  • Experience and Training in Gynae Oncology

TEACHING & AUDIT
Essential

  • Experience of audit in Colorectal Surgery

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS & RESEARCH

  • Evidence of Publications in peer reviewed journals within the last 5 years
  • Evidence of Presentation at National and/or International Colorectal meetings within the last 5 years
