The College of Engineering has an exciting opening for a Communications Manager. This is a full-time, permanent position.

The Communications Manager is responsible for the communications output and comprehensive strategy for groups within the College of Engineering Dean’s Office, including the Office of Inclusive Excellence (OIE), New Programs & Innovation (NPI), and the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA). This position works to engage internal and external stakeholders to keep them informed of and engaged with activities relating to College initiatives. This role supports recruitment and retention efforts for prospective, current and professional students; promotes student programming and resources; and supports a leading edge, inclusive student experience.

This agile team member will report to the Senior Director of Marketing & Communications while partnering closely with teams in the College of Engineering. The Communications Manager will advance multiple complex projects simultaneously and cultivate relationships with partners across the College’s ten departments.

What You Will Do: Communications strategy – 30%

  • Develop comprehensive annual communications strategy and plans, editorial calendars and timelines that align with critical deadlines and events.

  • Define measurable goals, schedules and budgets.

  • Build, populate and disseminate engagement reports, incorporating key data and benchmarks on metrics, gains and milestones acquired through digital efforts, including email, web and social media engagement.

  • Develop overarching web strategy to ensure accuracy, consistency and usability across websites.

  • Collaborate with the College’s Content team to highlight priorities, projects and initiatives.

  • Pitch features, profiles and other stories to writers across the College. Digital communications and content generation – 40%

  • Audit, create, edit and update web content for key audiences across the College’s website.

  • Collaborate with the Online Communications team on page updates and development, new student tools and other web-based resources.

  • Collaborate with the OIE team to build and populate internal resources and training pages for faculty and staff.

  • Write, edit and send email communications to key audiences using marketing automation platform, including, but not limited to recruitment campaigns and audience-specific newsletters.

  • Work with the College’s Social Media Manager to generate audience-specific content, promote DEI work and initiatives, and develop campaigns to meet recruitment and retention goals.

  • Update and disseminate student and diversity data on the College of Engineering website.

  • Draft and edit profiles and news stories related to the College of Engineering teams’ news and awards.

  • Ensure digital communications and other content use inclusive language, accessible formatting and incorporate feedback. Collateral management, production and design – 20%

  • Create and update fact sheets and one-pagers for related programs and initiatives.

  • Manage and update leadership presentations and slides.

  • Consult on graphic marks and design for other printed items.

  • Ensure materials produced for use by and distribution for the Dean’s Office meet UW brand standards and guidelines. Resource management and support – 6%

  • Guide the College on equitable language and messaging.

  • Present and share best practices for both DEI communications and student communications with internal partners. Other duties as assigned – 4% MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism or related degree and a minimum of three years of experience in marketing/communications or a related field. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. What You Bring:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including familiarity with AP style.

  • Strong computer skills and comfortable learning new programs, including experience with Microsoft Office and design programs such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva.

  • Demonstrated respect and commitment to diversity. Understanding and experience in leading diversity, equity and inclusion communications.

  • Ability to craft communications for varied audiences, including donors and community stakeholders. Understanding of development fundamentals, specifically in higher education is preferred.

  • Ability to be flexible and work under deadline pressure; achieve superior results; and work independently and as a team member.

  • Capacity to build relationships and collaborate with a variety of partners (e.g., staff, faculty, alumni, industry, vendors, media and students.)

  • Demonstrated skill analyzing and synthesizing large and complex amounts of technical information.

  • Strong project management skills and ability to track and report on success metrics.

  • Demonstrated ability to respond to and manage inquiries/topics that are sometimes sensitive with the highest professionalism.

  • Ability to develop, adhere to and successfully communicate branding and content guidelines.

  • Experience taking and editing photos and creating simple graphics for use on websites and other collateral.

  • Demonstrated experience with current social media and digital marketing platforms and best practices.

  • Previous experience creating and editing content such as news stories and homepage banners on websites using the content management system, Drupal.

  • Experience with marketing automation platforms such as Marketo.
